Full boat cover for CD 16

My new C Dory looks so sad as it sits in the rain (and the SNOW that I was told seldom falls in North Carolina but has four weekends so far since I bought the boat :amgry )

I do not have a camperback or cockpit cover as yet and am not sure I will be getting either one as my boat is really for day tripping. I had thought I would get a cockpit cover to keep the boat clean and dry while on the hard but lately have been thinking a full boat cover might be better.

Any opinions on which would work better? The way I see it, the full cover is a little more bulky to store but the truck will be empty anyway while I am on the water. I would also be somewhat more comfortable leaving stuff on the boat while in storage with a full cover keeping prying eyes out (I'd still pull the expensive stuff out but would leave all the other boat odds and ends). On the other hand, I suppose a full cover would be more expensive.

Any suggestions for a source for a cover? I would guess that a full cover involves a lot less customization than a cockpit cover or camperback might. Has anyone priced a cover?

While I'm here, I may as well ask an odd question. I have storage spot for my navigation light stick but there doesn't seem to be one for the cabintop steaming light. Is that just an oversight at the factory or is there some logic behind it?

Ours is not a 16 but a 22 Cruiser and it came with a full cover, except the cockpit section is somewhat open. The cover does seem to keep the boat cleaner, except for the leaves and stuff in the Splash well and some gets into the cockpit. I am looking into extending it to cover the well and the OB tops. That would be my recommendation, and a cover for a 16 would be considerably lighter than the one for a 22.

Several of us with 16 footers have gotten full boat covers from Angola Canvas in Indiana. They have the C-Dory patterns and lots of options for accomodating railings, radar, gps puck and other custom protrusions. There are several materials and colors to chose from. I got a material that they call "poly" which is cheaper than the more popular Sunbrella. It has worked well for me and after 5 winters it is still like new. When purchased in 2005 it was about $350 including shipping. You can see pictures in the Lizzie photo album. I also have a sunbrella slantback or mooring cover which is always on the boat, either snapped closed or rolled up on the back of the cabin roof. That was made by Bentley's in Portland. It came with the boat, so I don't know the individual price.

Why not just a "Slant-Back" Cover with windows. Keeps the cockpit clean and dry. Also, you can see out, if you have to run with it up. :wink
