Fuel range - 16 cruiser vs. 19 angler

I have been toying with the idea of a low profile 12 gallon moeller tank under the v-birth in our 16C. It is a permanent install and would have a deck fill and vent. Since we have moved the batteries forward, it would leave the transom open for storage of lighter weight items. Don't think you will catch me out 30nm. I don't trust the weather window that far.

I have a built in 13 gallon tank in my 16 cruiser. I can easily make a 60 mile round trip across Chesapeake Bay with plenty of gas to spare. The calmer it is, the more I have to spare, anything approaching 3 feet and it starts to eat the gas because of run time. I also have two 6 gal fuel cans (ok their plastic) that fit nicely in the motor well and strap in. That increases my range two fold and eliminate the worry of hunting for a marina with fuel.

BF thanks for the input. I just purchased a 2007 16 Angler for use in the San Juan Islands. I have been told they are tender with too much weight in the transom area. Mine carries a 60 hp Yamaha and I intend to hang a 6 hp kicker. I am also not small (220 lb). Do you think they 27 gallon tank plus a 6 gallon for the kicker would be too much for this boat?

Turtleblues, prior to our 22' Cruiser, we had a 16' Cruiser that we frequently used in the San Juans. We had two 7 1/2 gallon fuel tanks and one 3 gallon fuel tank for a total of 18 gallons of fuel. (All stored in the stern area). With the multitude of fueling stations in the San Juans, I never felt that I needed more fuel capability than that. Don't forget the sensitivity of the 16' to additional weight. The more fuel carried, also means the increased likelihood of fuel going stale if not cycled through frequently.

With the weight of gasoline at 6#'s per gallon the difference of your proposed 33 gallons vs. the 18 gallons yields a 15 gallon difference or 90 additional pounds. (I'd rather place a svelte 120# woman on my vessel than the extra 15 gallons of fuel and I'd end up with an only 30#' increase.... :wink ...sorry, couldn't resist the analogy... ).

(We had a 50 HP Honda and an 8 HP Honda kicker).

On my just-sold 16 cruiser (2005 with 2005 Honda 40), I got 7-8 mpg, and I cruised at about 4900 rpms when conditions allowed. On my "new" 19 angler (2004 with 2004 Honda 90 and 8), I get 5-6 mpg, cruising at the same rpm range and minimizing trim tab input when possible/comfortable.

Had 2x6 gallon tanks on the 16, 2x23 gallon tanks on the 19 (though all four tanks hold a bit more than advertised).
