Fuel Cap Replacement

I sent one of our fuel caps over board at the fuel dock last weekend. The screw came loose that holds it to the chain and that was the end of it. I robbed the cap off the water fill and made a make shift cap for the water. I can not find the correct size replacement cap. I ordered what I thought was the right cap made by Attwood, but it is to big. Does anyone know what brand these are and/or where to find a replacement?

Thanks

Hello Doug
I went through this experience as well.
First I had the wrong size and then a couple with the wrong threads. Go figure the threads are not standard.
I gave up and bought the complete hose fill. That way there is no question.
My boat is 1990 so that could explain the different threads.?
Easy to install the new fill.
Maybe you will be luckier than me and find the right cap.

Has anyone found a locking gas cap that still sits flush due to the location of the gas filler. all the ones I see have raised flanges or tabs which would be unsafe due to the location.
I, unfortunately, am getting hit by an occasional gas thief.

It is pretty hard to stop gas thievery in an outboard boat. It is easy to just undo or cut the fuel line at the motor, and suck it out. You can put a "coil" like device in the fill tube, to keep siphon tubes out, but then the thief will cut or undo the fuel line.

Also most of the locking gas caps will only keep out the honest person--the thief will easily defeat them--and may cause more damage to your boat. I have always been an advocate of leaving an old gas can full of some material which will damage the thief's engine around for them to steal. Also a "Game Camera"--might help. There are also alarms which could be set up to trigger a siren or strobe light.

Thanks Sunbeam, Thanks Edwin. I think I will take advice from both of you. I am going to order a complete seadog filller cap assembly. If I am lucky the cap will screw rright in to the existing housing. If not I will install the entire assembly. Time is of the essence here, so this will allow us to get it fixed quickly.

Why don't you just take one of your caps down to the local marine supply and match it up. I lost one a couple years ago and puchased on Amazon, used manufacturer stamp inside for cap..got free shipping also.
