freezer on deck?

In our travels we have noticed small apartment freezers sitting on the back deck or on an enlarged swim grid. Has anyone out there done this? The freezer is less weight than a cooler of ice. A small generator is the same weight as the extra battery. I am trying to plan it up and would appreciate some input from anyone that has a freezer set up.

Thanks Jim and Deb

I saw that freezer on the back step of a boat in Vancouver Isle. The generator ran 24 hrs/hay to keep it cool. The noise drove everybody nuts, except the boat with the freezer. They were proud of it.

think of your marine neighbors.

On the recommendation of several on the board I installed a Waeco Freezer/refrigerator under my helm seat and love it. It can be used as a freezer or refrigerator and works on 12v or 120v. They are pricey but I really like mine. They make several different sizes mine is the one in the link. There's a picture in my photo album.

On edit I didn't get mine from Sailor Sam just used that link to show the freezer. You can beat the price shown if you shop around.

We have been using the Norcold chest type freezers for at least 30 years--they work very well. As for the apartment sized freezers--they are a bit big for the C Dory (in my opinion). We have always built in a freezer on our larger boats with holding plates--which are far more effecient. But we have seen a number of trawlers with the apt top loaders on the flying bridge or aft deck. You can run them off an inverter and golf carts--but again need more than just one battery. (Honda EU 2000i is about 46 lbs), each Golf Cart is 68 lbs).

I don't see this as being practical in a C Dory, but the Norcold or Waeco is a good choice.
