foot pump for sink

ok,

so I am finally getting boat almost water ready hoping this weekend if the remaining fuse panel and battery cables show up.

but now that the bigger task are winding down I am focusing my thoughts to the smaller things, like where is the foot pump to the sink? it is not under the sink and I am starting to think that it is missing.

So I am wondering is there some random place these are stored. and if not what or where are replacements found.

also what is the best way to try and drain water in the hold? assuming water is in there just pump it all through the sink?

next task seeing if alcohol stove works.........

Jake,

If there is a handle at the spigot, chances are that is your pump. Otherwise, you either have an electric pump somewhere in the system, or a foot pump at the bottom of the cabinet. Without more to go on, it's hard to say what you have.

To drain the water, put a tightly sealed plastic hose over the spigot, get a flow going, and let it syphon out. There are a couple of threads on this one.

Good luck,

sorry I did not search it first. I have the handle on the sink and I will give that a go. thanks

Jake, if the boat has set for a long time, there is a chance that the pump may not work because of dried out parts. I've never taken one apart, but suspect it can be done. A replacement is probably not that expensive either.

It's pretty simple. There's an inlet and outlet fitting and each has a duck bill type valve, I believe. In the middle of the unit there's a coil spring that pushes the diaphragm out after each pump. The rubber diaphragm is held on with a large hose clamp, I believe.

On the 22's I've seen with a foot pump, it's installed in a "mouse hole" shaped cutout at the bottom of the front face of the galley unit - about where your left foot would hit if you were standing at the sink and pushed your toes forward. The ones I've seen are a "Baby Whale" pump, which is basically the size of a small, upside down cereal bowl made of black rubber.

If you don't have one and want to get one, they are commonly available. I like a foot pump vs. a hand pump because it's a lot easier to wash [both!] hands, rinse dishes, etc. when you can work with both hands and pump with your foot.

On bigger boats, I've used the Baby Whale in the head and a larger Whale Gusher foot pump in the galley. The advantage to the larger pump is that it pumps more water on each stroke, and it pumps on both the up and the down stroke. That said, on a C-Dory with a smallish water tank, I think the Baby Whale in the galley should be just perfect, and I don't think I'd want the "better" Gusher. Another advantage to the Baby Whale is that it's comfortable to pump with a bare foot.

Here is a photo of a Baby Whale, and also one where you can see the "mouse hole" where the pump is installed on a 22 (this is the lovely Carpy, whose mods are quite inspirational). It's just a simple cutout and the pump is mounted right to the boat bottom.
