Anyone have info on Flathead Lake? Quality of experience, best ramp and place to leave truck? Great to ponder.

I've heard stories about how rough it can be because of it's size and the fact that the wind fetch is so long that the wave chop can be dangerous to small craft.
Good prospects for PM's if they don't chime in within a day or so:

Cheryl and I will be throwing in some good info on Flathead Lake shortly but right now Ive got to get the boat launched on the Snake R. to take a wonderful elderly lady for a ride. This lady took a 19 foot Bell Boy from Fort Benton Mt to Cincinnati Oh. with her four children as crew in 1958, about 3500 miles. Her oldest child at the time was 14 and the youngest one was 2 years old. They were the last boat through the Owahee at Pierre before the Corps of Engineers slammed the gate forever. She loves canoes, Kayaks, and boats and she should be made an honorary C-Brat but I don"t have the authority Roger Juntunen ,In Ca Hoots- Idaho

We'll launch on Flathead tomorrow - from Big Arm State Park. Calm weather predicted for three days - tempts in 80's. Nice country - fishing not so good say the locals.
Beautiful lake surrounded by fantastic scenery. Have been by and around it by road many times and the roads surrounding the lake are what eliminated it from us wanting to explore it by boat. The west shore has several towns and the entire length populated more then I like. On the other hand am interested in what RogerJuntunen and El and Bill have to say.

We spend most of our boating time on Flathead its a very nice lake, clean clear water, we like it much better than Coeur d alene ad there is seldom much traffic. Water is slow to warm up in the summer usually july before we swim much.
Mostly we are around the Big arm area and out and around Elmo bay, Dayton and Wildhorse Island (yep they do have wild horses on the Island) There is a large sheltered bay on wildhorse that is great for spending the night, there are trails on the island ( which is mostly state owned).
Fishing is good for lake trout, (PM me for info) and there is a run of Lake whitefish that is seasonal. Perch there as well.
The best ramp and parking is at the campground at Big Arm. There are several around the Big arm area let me know if you would like more details.

we launched at Big Arm SP - nice folks, good ramp. Had a nice cruise on the lake yesterday. The geology is great. Anchored in Shelter bay for lunch and writing up the geology tale for Halcyon Days. Will post it when we get WiFi. Writing this from Little Skeemo Bay of Wild Horse Island. Nice anchorage last night. Only one (lonely) horse left but parks will be getting some mustangs next year. (our first horse was a mustang, and Liberty Lady was a great horse for our daughter).
We've sure enjoyed 'your' lake and thanks for the info. Any thoughts about Hungry Horse?

We had the Lucky Fin in a slip at Eagle Bend up until two days ago. You must have put in when I was taking out. We anchored in the same spot you did at Wild Horse Island. Watched deer and Rocky Mountain sheep in the morning during breakfast. Did not get to see any horses. Did you hike the island?
If I would have known your plans we would have stayed a few more days.
My Grandson had a terrific wedding. We used the Lucky Fin to haul the wedding party to the reception. Good place to eat in Lake Side. Lots of slips available for customers. The weather was perfect during the cruise, but was a bit rough when hauling the wedding party. Had to leave the unprotected dock. Pictures in my Tugnuts album.
You guys could stop and see us when you are done with your cruise. We are only 47 miles from Kalispell. We have extra room and lots of dock space to park your Halcyon. We are located on Middle Thompson Lake.

We had a discussion about Hungry Horse res. yesterday. We were told it had lots of bays, inlets and anchorages. The setting is in some absolute beautiful country. Have driven the shore line many time is the years past. The north end of the Bob Marshall wilderness area is down the road from there. We use to pack horses and mules from Spotted Bear heading south.
While in our neighborhood give it a shot. Maybe something we would enjoy.
