Fix for Leaky Hot Water Shower Faucet

Several past threads have discussed the problem of the shower faucet leaking (mainly the hot one) under the galley cabinet.

C-Dory has stepped up to the plate by putting new nylon fittings there and discontinuing the previously used sealant - using teflon tape.

However, the length of the nylon fitting is about six times the length of the actual threaded area in the nylon, so the flexible tubing, and possible bumping, are moving the nylon fitting askew and a drip forms.

I tried various fittings, but they all resulted in longer negative leverage forces against the short threaded length on the faucet.

I finally just heated the hose with a bar-b-que starter and clamped the hose directly to the faucet's threaded 'nipple' area. Voila! no leak and no leverage against the short threaded stub!

Photos are in Tom-a-Hawk's album.

The back (cold) water faucet has the original "before" nylon fitting which seems to work OK in that position. The forward (hot) water faucet has the hose clamped directly on the threads.

I should have explained that.

A part of the problem is that the fittings use British Standard Pipe Thread, rather than the NTP American Standard Pipe Thread. There is just enough difference that the two will not mate properly in many circunstances. Nylon makes it worse, since the threads will distort so easily.

I am glad to see that you have a "solution"...

We also had problems with the shower faucets leaking - in fact, one hose came off under pressure. Fortunately the dealer rep who happened to be in the cabin at the time, heard it come off and turned off the water pump before too much leakage had occurred. The dealer's remedy (Sportcraft Marina) was to replace the fittings as shown. They did a good job and it appears to be working fine.

Mark,

Thanks for those photos. The weak link in the C-Dory fix was a shallowly threaded, long nylon fitting attached to the metal faucet threads. It looks like the all metal fittings your dealer installed are far superior to that.

As for me, my leak occured at the dock in the night with little access to exotic fittings. I tried finding fittings the next day, but was not able to find what your dealer did.

I bought my boat thru C-Dory via the sales manager who had left C-Dory at the time of my delivery, so essentially I had no dealer or rep to whom I could inquire for help.

'Looks like they fixed you up well. I still feel that my 'jack-rigged' fix could be a help if that link leaks while cruising away from plumbing stores.

Hello John,
You can try to fix this hot shower faucet by following these steps.

1. This is the handle that is used to turn the shower on and off.
2. Pry off the handle cap (located at the outside tip of the handle) with a pocketknife. This will expose the internal handle screw.
3. Unscrew the handle screw with a screwdriver.
4. If it does not come off, heat it with a hair dryer.

I had the shower hot flex hose pop off under the galley cabinet. The hose clamp was not tight enough. The only problem was I was in the process of showering. Dashing naked and soap covered, to the water pressure switch. Then cleaning out the cabinet enough to re-attach the hose, so I could finish the shower. At Lake Powell and in an isolated cove, so no witnesses.
