Fishing Puget Sound

Geez!

I can't believe you were out today. Our house overlooks Useless Bay, and the winds persisted all day - too rough for us! I even had trouble staying on the ladder trimming the fruit trees...

We're hoping to get out tomorrow. Forecast is much better - 10 knots decreasing in the afternoon. High of 45, so I'm counting on the Wallas. We'll probably stay at Possession - or PNP area - but will keep our ears on for ya.

Good luck if you do go out -

Mac & Linda

Just gotta keep this thread on top -

Had no luck fishin all day Sunday at Point No Point / Pilot Point, but it was just an absolutely beautiful day to be on a C-Dory....

But, today Linda hauled in a keeper Blackmouth - I had 2 that where just an inch or so too short. Salmon tonight, oh boy!

Only one more day of fishin for BM. Hope it doesn't snow

Linda, Way to go! Boy, the blackmouth have been few and far between this month. We still have Dec open down here in areas 11 and 13. Hope the fishing picks up. Enjoy your fish, and a raspberry :cocktail or two. Heck, have one for me. Robbi

Morning Tom,

The lure didn't seem to matter. Linda used a plug when she caught her BM, I was using a hoochie (squid). We were trying to follow the 100 ft contour, along the south edge of Possession Bar with the downrigger set at 120 or so. Didn't hit bottom, but Linda did catch 1 flounder. Caught quite a few shakers on both setups. Had no luck all day 'till we decided to quit around 2pm (wind was picking up), then within a few minutes, we got strike after strike after strike. It was a lot of fun - I was still trying to deal with Linda's fish when my line went zinging. I'm guessing tide or location was the key, although from what I've read, it wasn' a good tide for fishin (only a 2 ft change from low to high - book says we want a larger delta).

Now, should we go out today, last day for BM, or not? Humm.... life is full of these tough decisions...

Mac

Hadn't noticed the re-opening in area 10. Thanks! Guess that gives me two weeks to get all my projects done.

btw - spent ~3 hrs out yesterday - caught a few shakers, two flounders but no keepers. same spot, same lures, but a little earlier in the tide change. much nicer day weatherwise however.

Hey everyone.....

I thought I would continue last years thread into the new summer season.

I'm going to head out this coming weekend for the Elliot Bay Bubble. Anyone else been out on it this year? I caught two nice big kings there last year, so hopefully we will have some luck.

Anyone else getting any fish this year?

Dan Roger you guys killing anything lately?

I had a great weekend at Neah Bay about 3 weeks ago and will be heading out there again first week in August. Was out this Sat. and fished Jeff Head - we got going a bit late (on the water about 6:45/7AM) but did catch a few shakers and a couple of smallish coho. We kept one coho that was probably a little over 2lbs - small, but I actually like the smaller silvers - bright red in color and good eating.

We also dropped some crab pots around the corner from Jeff Head - about 1/3 of the way down to Indianola. The crabbing was good there shortly after the opening but the place seems to have been picked clean at present. I've seen a lot of indian/commercial pots out in that area so I'll have to find some better, less used places for future crabbing efforts. BTW - Sat. was the first time I ever caught a dogfish in my crab pots - the damn thing was half in and had his nose stuck in the mesh. I try to be nice, but I hate those fish - always trying to stick you with the spikes on the tail.... I managed to get him out without harm to either of us but of course the pot didn't attract a lot of crabs with him trashing around in it.

Been fishing the Tulalip Bubble most every weekend since it opened. We have had some GREAT boat rides :) . The run must not be in yet so hopefully next weekend will boat some fish. This is our first year to fish Tulalip so we are still learning the bottom contours.

Looking forward to the first of August for area 9 as Possesion Bar is our favorite place to fish.

I went out on the Bubble about 3 weeks ago with a friend. We had 3 drive bys and 1 shaker for the day. I haven't heard any good reports on it since. I went out to area 7 yesterday afternoon and didn't touch a fish. There were a few in the morning that some friends caught but not many. I've also read some good reports from Elliot Bay and Pt Defiance. But the main consensus so far is that the fish a few and far between!

I fished the Elliot Bay bubble two weekends ago. Had one on that shook the hook, and that was it.

I saw several people catch some pinks, not sure if I call that catching, but I guess they did better than me. Seems like the kings weren't really in yet. Who knows, it's been hot and dry, so maybe they are late.

I hit a couple of my crabbing spots around Shillshole and only got four crabs. Last year I limited everytime I pulled in those spots. All I can figure is that the smaller window, and smaller limits have made people hit those areas harder.

I won't be able to fish this weekend, but will be out the one after that. (Aug 20th-21st). That was about the time we caught a couple kings on the Elliot Bay bubble fishery last year. After that the silvers should be in pretty well.

I was up in Juneau over the 4th of July. Got plenty of king crab, shrimp, rockfish, and halibut. Every time I fish up there it kinds of ruins it a little for me down here. Might head up there again in September to shoot some ducks and catch some more halibut.

Hey Gary.

Looks like you fish over at Seiku there. Do you think it's worth heading out there two weekends from now, or am I better off just fishing the Elliot bubble?

Can I put my 22 in at the Olsons ramp? I've never even been to that area at all. Or is there another ramp nearby?

I went over to Sekiu with Rogerbum last Sunday. This was the slowest fishing I have had there in the 5+ years I have been going there. I landed a nice king of about 20lbs that had too many fins so it swam away. Then Roger had 2 pinks come off at the boat. Those are the only fish we touched all day. Of course we did stop fishing at noon as I had to get back to town. :(

Olsens ramp would be fine. But their docks suck. The best marina in that area is by far Big Salmon in Neah Bay. At Sekiu I actually prefer the Coho Resort. The problem with them is their ramp is VERY steep. Plus they often want to have you bow tie and I always refuse as I would rather spend a few extra bucks and tie up normally.

Usually I would take my chances at Sekiu. The fishing can be fantastic there. But this year I would not say that. It is more hit or miss from all the people I have talked with and from my experience last Sunday. So with gas prices as they are I would hit Humpy Hollow or Elliot Bay (if it is still open, I heard they may close it).

Thanks for the report Gary. Guess I can save myself some loot and some aggravation.

Since I can't fish this coming weekend, I guess I'll take your advice and just head down toward Shipwreck the following weekend.

I'll plan on targeting silvers, and probably hooking plenty of pinks. I'm just not ecouraged about the silver run this year, so we'll see how it shakes out.

I think the wife and I might head out the locks, and then stay Saturday night at Langley. Anyone else going to be out fishing that weekend???? Let's grab a cold beer.

I personally like fishing for Pinks. But from what I have seen I think the run size is going to be small just like the rest of the runs this year. I hope I'm wrong though!

I know Gary won't want to hear this but the fishing was slow at Sekiu and Neah Bay for all the days prior to him coming and the day he was there. HOWEVER, the next day (Mon), things picked up (of course, the day AFTER you leave - sorry).

I had two guests on Mon., a couple from work who have a 2 yr. old. The plan was to take one out at a time while the other watched the kid. Since salmon fishing had been so slow the previous 4 days, the plan was to take one to Sekiu for Salmon fishing run back to Neah Bay by 11 and take the one who could (in theory) deal with motion sickness better to bottom fishing around the corner from Tatoosh.

We got down to Sekiu and the first fish (after about 5 mins) was a nice 8lb hatchery silver - right in front of the caves. We caught a bunch of pinks (15-20?) and about 8 wild silvers. The pinks were at every depth from 50'-200'. I kept the lines low trying to pick up a king, but kept catching pinks. Eventually, I pulled one line up to 50' and still got mostly pinks but a few silvers.

Since the salmon fishing was OK, I wanted to have the other person drive to Sekiu, but there was no way to contact her. So... I ran back to Neah Bay, re-fueled and ran back to Sekiu. We caught several more fish and eventually kept another silver and filled out the rest of the limit with pinks.

Tues (8/9) was even better as I could fish Neah Bay again. I had the owner of a local wine shop (Rudy) on board. We fished off Waddah early with no luck for the first 30-45 mins. Ran 1/2 way to Tatoosh to another spot I usually catch silver at and caught about 15 pinks and a few wild silvers in 1-2 hours. Rudy had never seen so many fish get thown back in his life... Again, at all depths below 50 it was mostly pinks.

We picked up and ran out to Table top (about 5-6 miles W of Tatoosh) and again, we were picking up pinks like crazy, I was working the down riggers to all levels from 50' down to 220' trying to find kings. Again at all depths below 50' it was almost all pinks. We finally retained a couple of pinks but I didn't want to use our 2 fish limit (there are no "bonus" pinks in area 4) on just pinks. Finally, I figured out that we could catch almost all silvers if I pulled up to 35'. We filled out our limits on silvers in <1hr. The mark rate was probably about 1 fish in 4 or 5.

We then went in and fished bottom fish. It was a bit windy, and the schools of sea bass I was locating were a bit small so it was hard to keep over them. But we still picked up5 or 6 sea bass and a few kelp greenling. I also caught and released two halibut - one about 40# and one about 30# - that was fun but both fish took 20 mins or so of time out of the sea bass fishing... The smaller one took off so hard at first I thought he was going to spool me - he ran about 400' off a 900' spool before I got him stopped - I hooked him on a jig tied to the main line (60#) so I could some real pressure on. The bigger one I caught on a 25# leader with dropper loops and herring on the hooks. Since I rig those with a surgeons knot at both ends, the breaking strength is about 18-20# so I had to baby the 40# fish. Fortunately, he never nade the freight train run little guy did.

Yesterday, I decided I was going to realy target kings and the weather and swells were nice enough that I made the run out to Blue Dot (25 miles W of Tatoosh). This was a first for me - that's the farthest I've gone off shore in my boat. The run out was slow as there were 4-5' swells with a little bit of wind waves - I had to keep things around 10kts to not get too beat up. THe wind let up a bit as we got out and the swells dropped down to about 3'. I ran the lines down at 120-150' looking for kings but didn't find any. Unfortunately, by guest that day was going a bit green by the time we got out there. As a former army guy, he toughed it out for a couple of hours, but that limited the time I could fish for kings.

None-the less, the silvers we a bit bigger out there and in the process of setting the down riggers several hit on the way down and most of them were 5-8 lb hatchery fish. I retained the first two, but kept looking for kings. Eventually, we buddy said he wasn't sure he could take any more and my suggestion that he would feel better if he threw up wasn't looked on too fondly. So I pulled the lines up to 35' and we filled out the limits with silvers by 11AM - all nice fish and frankly I like silvers better than kings anyway... It would have been nice to hook a king but it wasn't required for the day to still be excellent. I didn't see hardly any kings at the fish cleaning station so I wasn't alone. However everyone who knew what they were doing (and a few who didn't) limited on silvers, the rest limited on pinks.

So - in sum, it's worth going out to Sekiu or Neah Bay now.

Roger,

Good to hear you had some good action. At least someone is catching some fish.

Sounds like it might be a good idea to head out there to Seiku. I'm going to see if I can make it the weekend after this. I've been to Sequim, and Port Angeles, when I was a kid, but I have never spent any time in that area as an adult.

Your profile says Kenmore. Do you stay a week at a time there, or do you live there?
