fishfinder/gps combo

I just purchased a 16 ft Angler (2007) and am wondering if the internal gps antenna on most of the fishfinders are sufficient, or do I need t find a model that has an external antenna.

The "internal" antennas on the GPS chart plotters work well in the cabins of the C Dory. You want to be sure that there is no metal between the sky and the unit. However the latest chip sets will work in cars and houses. I would try without an external antenna. I use several with no external antennas and have had no problems even in Alaska.

I have the lowarance hds7 with the unit mounted near the winshield no problems with satalite lock had to move foreward the radar dome was causing interference.

Did you mean you moved the radar dome forward because it interfered with the GPS signal? I'm considering getting a Lowrance HDS 10 for our 22 C-dory, and I may be adding radar at some point. Your input would be appreciated.

thanks , tom

I have had radars on my C Dories and not found that they interfered with my internal GPS antennas--but the Radar was set back so that it was not just right overhead. The radar antenna is only several inches wide x the length of the scanner--usually 16 t0 24 inches. The mounting plate may give more of a shadow than the scanner does.
