First run with the E-Tec

Hauled the boat to Newport over the weekend and put two hours on the new motor in Yaquina bay. Had a couple of non-motor related problems to work through. Biggest issue was the deck drains leaked , quick trip to England’s and a couple hours to get sealed up. Launched around 1:00 PM with a heavy North wind blowing around 15 knt’s. Stopped by the fuel dock and topped off the tank then out to see how the motor ran.

First impression was good, the motor starts with just a touch of the key, takes about a half second to fire and no choke to fool with. Very quite at idle and when underway compared to the Yamaha.

One person, full tank of gas, half tank of water. While not a heavy load not exactly a light load either. Temp was around 65, wind blowing at 15 knts’ solid 1 foot chop on the bay.

Still some work to do on getting the correct prop, the 15 x 15 gave 5450 rpm and 37 mph did not get fuel usage numbers at the top end. Looking for around 5700 rpm ideally, will return the 15 x 15 and see what we can come up with.

After the top end run I did several runs around 21 to 25 mph. At 21 mph 2450 rpm and 6.9 to 7.0 gph fuel for a solid 3 mpg.

25 mph 2800 RPM 8.1 gph once again 3 mpg. Only time I ever saw 3 mpg with the Yamaha was just off idle so very pleased with the numbers.

On the way back in I did some non-planning runs. At 6.3 mph was only burning .94 to .97 gph for 6.4 mpg. Need to run these again as there was some outgoing tide helping but the wind was quartering off the bow and was going directly into a 1 foot chop.

Very happy with the performance, still working through the gauge setups to get the displays the way I want. Really like the I Command gauges just a lot of options on display types and combinations to pick from.

Comes up on plane and accelerates like a whole new boat. Can't wait to get in a fishing trip and some ocean time.

Amazing how small that engine head cover looks for a 200 hp engine! What is the weight on that size? Is it less than the Honda 150's?

John

John, the Honda 150 long shaft weighs in at 485 lbs the 200 E-Tec long shaft is 427 lbs. The E-Tec is about about the same width as my 115 Yamaha and around 6 inchs taller and 4 inches deeper.

Be interesting to see how it pans out from a fuel usage standpoint when fully loaded. My guess is that it will give about the same economy as the 150 Honda at low to midrange cruise speeds.

If I ever get to the repowering stage on the TomCat, I think the smaller size, reduced maintenance and 116 lbs less weight would really look good on a TomCat.

John, the reduced maintenance schedule was a big appeal for me. I think the cost of expensive 2-stroke oil will negate the maintenance savings but I don't need to haul the boat across Portland nearly as often so I will save on time and gas.

The e-tec 150 175 and 200 are all the same engine, weight and size and all lighter then the honda 135, 150. I thinks its a great choice and one i wish I could have made, but honda had great finance for the whole boat.

I drove an E Tec 225 H.O. big block V 6 Monday in Nashville on a 20 Ft blue sparkly Champion Bass Boat . Wow........... at 50 something MPH the fuel monitor said well over 6 miles to the gallon ! Of course I had to know "how fast does it go?" I got her up to 73mph in the afternoon chop. The multifunction gauge said it went 75mph earlier in the day . That was a box stock boat . It was the best running 2 stroke motor there . But there were no four strokes on the go fast boats . Its coming though. There are not really any bad motors . E tec is great for power to weight ratio and grunt. 4 strokes have a high level of reliability. They get very similar economy.
