Finally bought a C-Dory

Hi! everyone. Went for my first ride on my 1985 C-Dory Angler Classic today. Formally ..K-Dory...Temperature was a little cold, 6 degrees Centigrade but i had a great time. Lots of people at the marina loved the boat, think its the first one ever around here.The ride was a completly new experience for me, the flat bottom and waves will take some getting used to but i love the boat. I did notice that there was about a half a cup of water in the depressions where the drain plugs are. Maybe they weren/t inserted correctly but can they be replaced with new ones if the problem persists. Took a few pictures which i will post. Thanks
 
Congratulations on the purchase! After hanging around for over 2 years, you did good! Even better to take the first ride when the temp was that low! On the other hand, the C Dory is the perfect boat for that cold weather. We wish you lots of pleasant voyages and many happy hours aboard.

Tug: You can find the plugs most anywhere Walmart, K-mart or any boat shop. Get the brass with the T handle and put them in from the inside. What motor came on the boat? Mine has the original 1987 Johnson 90 vro. I'm the second owner and have had it for eight years without missing a beat. Have Fun. C-Otter
 
Thanks everyone for the replies. The motor that came with the boat is a 1999 DF Suzuki 4 stroke and 1985 8 HP Johnson. The two transom plugs are not the regular boat plugs that you are referring to....they must be the original 1985 type that came with the new boat. They are just a rubber plug that is attached to the top of the hole and the plug swings down and is inserted into the hole. On the water side of the plug is a type of flattened hose that must act like a scrubber because it seems to let water out of the boat but not in. These are not something that i have seen sold anywhere. Thanks
 
Glad to hear an Ontarian has a 22-Classic. Hope I can run into you - figuratively speaking - next year in your particularly beautiful part of the planet.

I'm not sure, but it sounds like the drain 'plug' your talking about is a self-bailing mechanism. I'm not really wild about any kind of mechanism that might be held open with some detritus caught in the self-bailer. It wouldn't be a problem at planing speeds, but anchoring overnight with a twig in the drain might cause less-than-groovy memories of that trip. My preference is to keep the drain holes absolutely water-tight, then to drain any water that might enter the cockpit through bilge pump(s).

I'm going to guess that the self-bailer was a owner-installed item, although it may have been a dealer option.

Welcome and congrat's on your new boat. You've got alot of water to explore down there. I've a son in Parry Sound and am looking forward to towing 'Lucky's7s' down east when I retire in a year and a half. Good boating from a fellow Canuck.

Believe it or not that's the same plug Marben provided new with Adeline in July '89.



I quit using it when somebody told me that small debris, such as a piece of fishing line, could lodge in there and PRESTO, leaky boat. :roll:

I used that type of plug on my 1983 Classic for years. When they are new they work great in letting the water out while underway but pinching shut when stopped.
The problem is that the rubber starts to deteriorate and then they need to be removed and replaced. After 4 or 5 of them I decided the pluses were not over coming the negatives so I started using the conventional plug with a twist lock that expands the rubber plug. I also carried several extra lever type plug for emergencies.
Good luck with your "new" C-Dory. They are a great boat.
