Folks it is not the corn farmers--it is the ethanol lobby. I own a farm which produces corn and soy. As far as I am concerned the government can have all of their subsidies. Farming is a competative business, world wide, just like any other. I just sold 2010 corn crop for a record price. Of course the crop yield was low, because of weather, issues. But that is farming.

In my way of thinking it is a few congressmen who want to please their consituants and pushed this through just before the upcoming election (confirmed by the Wall Street Journal article today).
 
I just got back from a trip down to the Florida keys and almost every marina that I looked at had signs proclaiming no ethanol in their gas.
I think that boaters need to be more vocal to the on water sources for gas about wanting/demanding non ethanol fuel something positive might happen. I'm going to start asking why if they can do it Florida why can't it happen here? Maybe states have different laws. My problem I live in Pa. and boat in other states as Pa. is a little short on saltwater coastline. In May we are cruising around in the Chesapeake Bay for a week or so it will be interesting to see how they deal with the ethanol situation. If one marina switches I would think they would do more business as someone would have to be living under a rock not to know of the evils of ethanol laced gasoline. I think in tough times and the budget being what it is putting pressure on law makers to kill the funding subsidies might be easier now that money is getting tight. I know it kind of like a Don Quixote deal, I'm going to look into getting some t shirts made up. Maybe something like Ethanol is a bad idea for your gasoline then on the other side says SPEAK UP Ban Ethanol in gasoline.

Most if not all marinas in our area do not have any ethanol in the fuel. The only gas station (land based) in Pensacola, which had not ethanol, stopped carrying it about a month ago. I picked up some non ethanol on the water and it was $4.08, but they had just received another load, and the price was going up about 10 cents a gallon in the next day or so.
 
Two thoughts on this topic:

1. Ethanol was a brainchild of the Bush Administration and yes, the Obama Administration has continued down the same path, so let's not politicize it.

2. My wife and I own a 2011 Ford Fusion Hybrid and the use of E15 voids the factory warranty, so I'm not sure that E15 will find wide acceptance (people need to check their owners manual).
 
I agree with all of you,but if you really want to get there attention in washington and at home one thing needs to be done.
THE PEOPLE NEED TO SHUT THE COUNTRY DOWN.

What does the gov't care about your car. That's your problem. They have limos, Air Force jets...you're just here to pay the bill.
 
Ethanol was not the "brain child" of any one administration. I agree that politics should be kept out--but stick to the facts. It has been phased in over a very long time. An engine which ran on ethanol and turpentine was built in 1826! (including early Fords which ran on Ethanol in 1908. ) In the WWII era the military used it as a fuel, with large scale production. It was added to fuel as an oxgenator, when MTBE was banned. In 1990, 1992, 1995 and 1998 federal regulations required ethanol in many areas.

I am a bit confused about not running E 15 in a 2011 Fusion--since the engine is designed to run on E 85, and one of my friends who owns one had recently run his car on E 85...

In any case, I am not in favor of Ethanol as a primary fuel source, even though some of my income is derived from the growth of corn.
 
FYI- The 2011 Fusion Hybrid was never designed to run on E85, it is not a flex fuel vehicle (according to FMC). Check with Ford Motor Company, I have and was told in writing that the use of even E15, will void the new car warranty (a surprise to me).
 
Lots of interesting discussion on the net regarding Hybrid vs. E85 Flex Fuel. The hybrid wins going away (so to speak). I do love my 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid 4X4, which has been trouble free. Mileage is just OK, I got 30 mph on our trip to Moab, but around home it is around 27 or 28. I'm considering that Ford Fusion hybrid, but I'd hate to part with the Escape.

Burn imported oil first, save ours for when foreign countries run out!

Even if using ethanol as a fuel is a good idea , making it out of corn is not according to a number of experts in the field. Making ethanol from other biomass such as wood debris might make more sense if the process can be perfected.
Corn ethanol is all about powerful lobbyists. I'm not just picking on farmers. Many lobbys in washington wield too much power. Farmers still get paid for Not growing some crops also. Only government could come up with that idea. Iowa farm land is now $10000 an acre.(25% increase in one year)
