Etec fumes??? - Honda ?? repower for 22

Thanks for the thoughtful comments from everyone - and the recommendations to consider Toms Outboard and Kitsap Marina -The crew at Toms Outboard was very patient with questions & pricing. Matt at Kitsap Marina has been very helpful on the phone, offering various technical and trade in options.]

We are fortunate in South Sound to have Kitsap Marina, Toms Outboard, Verles, & Pickering Marine - all nearby. I plan a little contemplation time before final choice.

Thanks again - great discussion -

Wefings , like Matt @ Kitstap sells [almost] all of the popular brands [well, except Merc]. We do it because folks have preferences that go beyond whether it starts and runs every day, or price,or color , and actually gets into the territory you might call emotional . I have heard many times about a persons 2nd cousin twice removed that had a brand X 10 or 15 years ago [you pick]and it blew up on him and I'd never have one of those crappy motors, they just aint no good.
So ,as a dealer you try to please as many folks as possible , but pay the price to do so as you aren't distributing the cool aid for just one brand .Its a dealer's dilemma. But you better have a trained mechanic or two or three and a boatload of parts and service and 60 to 100 dollar a month internet "service fees" to make everybody happy . Thats why a relationship with your dealer is important . Advertising is powerful stuff , but if you look at the history of Tohatsu , for instance , they are the oldest outboard maker in Japan and dominate world commercial users . We sell those too . I would be as comfortable staking my boating safety and happiness with a Tohatsu as a Honda . They are not as glamorous and successful in multiple world venues but in the marine world they are just as prestigious to me . They just started advertising nationally recently , don't have the budget that the big boys have , but are quite respected in the industry . If you think about it , its
kinda like C Dory............

We have a 2007 22-foot cruiser and have a 115 e-tech and have loved it. After three years of heavy use it has been reliable and very fuel efficient. Exhaust fumes have not been a problem, and we have been running the XD-100 oil.

I'm not sure what effect the type of oil has on the exhaust fumes, but again the exhaust fumes have not been a problem. I would not hesitate to repower with a e-tech again. And as someone pointed out earlier, the motor does not burn much oil at all. And during winter blackmouth season if the weather is a little rough we will even troll with the e-tech and plug fouling has not been a problem.

Can't speak for the 90 e-tec but the exhaust smell from my 200 is not much of an issue. Under the right conditions some exhaust will get into the cockpit and while not my favorite smell the intensity is not much worse than 4-stroke under the same conditions.

If you are going to go through the pain and cost of repowering then why not just move to the 115. In actual use the higher hp motor will operate just as economically as the smaller motor with the added benefit of longer life and reserve power if needed.

Now it becomes a very simple decision. a 505lb 2250cc inline 4 Honda or the 390lb 1727cc V4 e-tec. I would expect that the e-tec producing 115hp at 5700 rpm has a compatable torque curve with the honda's 115 at 5500 rpm. The Honda screams pontoon boat the light weight low center of gravity inherently smoother V4 e-tec screams c-dory.

Have fun with the decision Jim
