Epic fishing from Eureka Ca!!!!!!!!!!

This was one of the best weekends for fishing that I have ever seen!

It started off on Saturday. The weather forecast was for 10=25kt winds building in the afternoon. So we decided to go get salmon early and be back before the wind comes up. We left the dock at 0700 and headed 8 nm offshore to the reported salmon bite. The bite was wide open and had a hard time getting the lines in the water. We kept our 4 to 25 lbs and released another 8-10 keepers. Back at the dock at 1000. Margaret wasn't able to go Saturday so we decided to go Sunday to get her some salmon. The following is a posting that I placed on a local tuna board.

The tuna numbers weren't epic but, the day sure was. Left the dock at 0700 wanted to catch a couple salmon because the bite was great the day before. The wind was supposed to come up in the afternoon so we wanted to be back early. We got to the salmon area and started catching salmon just as fast as you could get your line in the water. We caught our limit of four and release 6-8 with only one rod in the water. For the last fish I rigged my Margaret's 7 wt fly rod with a chovie and put in on the downrigger. She fought 4 and landed 2 kings. What a kick.

Then Banana Luck called us out on a good tuna bite. The salmon were 8.5 nm from shore the tuna bite was 16 miles from shore. SO we figured what the heck. From 8 miles out the water was high 59's to 60's. On our way out to 41/35 we saw jumpers, 3 groups of them with no takers. We fished for about an hour catching 2 and farming 2. We headed back to the barn and trolled to within 8.5 nm from the bell. The last fish were picked up 12.5-13 nm from bell. Nice blue warm water all the way in. We ended up with 5 for the day, all around 18-20 lbs. Total on 8 bites, 3 on purple Rapala, 4 on purple cedar plug and one on zuch Zuker. The wind never did come up. The ocean was flat and the weather was sunny and HOT.

I was pretty tired after two days of fishing but, I had a couple of friends that didn't get in on the weekend's fishing and they wanted to catch a salmon. We started the day a little later and met at the dock at 0900. From there we went out to the salmon grounds and put the lines in. Almost immediately we caught a 25+ lb king. At that time a friend called me on the radio and said that the tuna bite was unbelievable. He gave me the location and it was only another 5 miles from our current location. I look at my crew and asked if they wanted to get some albacore. They said sure. So we headed a little SW to the reported bite. We traveled about 5 mins and decided to troll to the other boats. (NEVER GOT THERE) As soon as we put our lines in the water we had a double hook-up of 20-30 lb albacore. We continued to circle the area and filled the boat. We left the tuna grounds at 1230 with 12 big albacore and a blue shark that was caught on an eight weight fly rod. WHAT A WEEKEND!!!!

Wow... What an amazing weekend's fishing! Something a guy dreams about. Congrats on the good luck. It's neat to see that you took so many others out to share the good luck...

This has been a weird year. Up here in Oregon the Albacore fishing has been great. Over the weekend they were catching them within 7 miles from shore. And to top it off there were 2 Dorado landed off of the Columbia river. Who would of thought, Dorado and Northern Oregon. Crazy.

Sounds like a great weekend of fishing. It is hard to believe that the tuna are so close. We also are having a great season just 80 miles north. A salesman at the local marine store told me that tuna fishermen out of Brookings had their jigs ripped off. They ran into a school of blue fin tuna.
I have started to rig extra lines, just in case we are so unlucky to run into the big tuna. This is a season to remember.
