Engine dies when using port tank

Given the number of suggestions and the time it takes for the fuel already in the line to run dry, I think field testing is in order. That means I'll have to drag the boat over to the local lake, find a nice quiet cove to sit in and run through all the possible causes/solutions to the problem. Could take me hours or even days if the weather is nice! Oh woe is me :D

I hope that this is just a case of the selector switch not engaging properly but now I know a lot more about the fuel line setup. That's good knowledge for the next issue. There's always a next issue, right?
 
I just bought a old 22. It came with two never used saddle tanks. I was at sea off Venice La and found the port tank would not work. Who ever it was that set up the port tank put a bulb on it. There was no need as a bulb was on the line to the motor. ie two bulbs in series. Short story is that there was some kind of glue on all the hose fittings and the lines were stopped up with the glue. I put on new hoses with no bulb and no glue. Some people should not work on mechanical things.

Ha! Isn't that the truth. I have thought that more than once when working on boats, cars, etc. Sometimes in more colorful terms :lol:

I look at the racor bowl every time i go out. I drain the fuel at least once a week, if using it daily. The filter is changed every 100 hours, or if it needs it sooner.
 
Hi, We have a 2007 22' also, I have had the same problem, Runs great on Starboard, will run on Port side for 3 to 4 min. found out to turn the Pointer to another 1/4 Position it ran fine on the Port Tank. Without going to the Boat Can't remember exatly which direction it was Pointed to for the Port Tank to run. Jim

I think that must be the issue I mentioned above, which is that apparently some of the pointer/labels don't "point" accurately. i.e. the label and the pointer disagree. I discovered this phenomenon when browsing threads here on the forum. I checked mine and it does point properly as the label indicates, but apparently quite a few of them don't.

I don't know if tparrent has run successfully on the port tank with the pointer pointing to it before or not though. If he has then I guess it's something else.
 
Thanks Bob. I was not aware that the racor is something that needed to be looked at on a regular basis. I'll have to take look. Appreciate the information. Stan Major
 
I trailered the boat down from NYC to my "other" home in North Carolina yesterday. The local lake is the perfect place to try to sort out the fuel issue with out having to worry about tugs, ferries and container ships all bearing down on me :shock:

I have used the port tank before but I wouldn't be surprised if the selector switch is a little off. That's the first thing I will check.

Hello fellow Brats, Just joined this little group this morning. I bought a used 2010 19 ft w 90 hp Honda only 42 hours. First time out for Salmon in Astoria in Sept. 2013 was just getting the day started and used the fuel tank selector to the Port tank, which is at 6 O'clock on the dial and after 5 to 10 minutes the engine died. Noticed the prime bulb was pinched and didn't feel like it was priming, so I switched to starboard tank and bulb relaxed started engine again. Tried this couple more times with same results. I called the dealer in Milwaukie Or. and he said to bring it by. Soon a Saturday couple weeks later went by and his mechanic hooked it up and ran it and it faithfully died. After checking several things we were all standing there talking and the salesman remembered some bulletin and ran back to his office and came back with a decal that looked like the one behind the fuel selector and the location of the Port tank was at 9 O'clock instead of 6 O'clock. Well of course that solved the problem, don't have any idea whether the former owner new of this.
