Last night we had a big one... centered 2 miles from our house.. 5.7 I hear... What a shock to wake up to... I went to bed early and had just fallen asleep when it hit....and I thought Darn it Sue, Quit shaking the bed...then I realized I was flying out of bed... it was not at all like the Northridge quake that was a roller this one was violent shaking...we now have lots fewer dishes...and knick knacks... everything is on the floor...my garage is a mess, knocked over my air compressor and my motorcycle off the hoist... everything out there is on the floor...we now have sheetrock cracks everywhere... but no broken windows and the water and gas is intact...today I need to get under the house and check the pipes.

Thanks to all that have called and written, we are fine...a bit shocked but fine... we were real lucky, Last night I went out with the fire department and we did well compared to other small communitys around us...they had split water tanks, lots of gas leaks and water leaks.

Joel,

WOW, if it wasn't for the C-Brats I wouldn't know what is going on around. it was here that I first heard about the I-5 bridge collapse too.

Sure glad you two are OK. (Pet the pups, they'll calm down). Hope all goes well with the pipes.

Looks as if you are up at Lake Almanor! Hang on--lets hope that is the end of earth quakes for a while, and not a pre-cursor. Sorry to hear about your losses.

No, We had our kids here to help pick up broken stuff....it is kinda like someone picked up our house and turned it over...then shook it...we counted 90 broken pieces of Waterford crystal ....our closets have their contents still on the floor...what a mess...I went out to the garage to lift my air compressor off it's side.. no damage to it, and my motorcycle is hard to tell the new damage from the normal damage of my motorcycle... I had a spray can burst when it fell....I now have a silver wall in my shop...thought it smelled like paint last night.... not so kool..

I really want to thank you all that called and e-mailed...Steve Brandon even offered to drive up to help clean up...what good friends we have in all you. Sue and I really appreciate you all....Thanks

Sorry to hear about all that Waterford .... ouch.

Did finally hear about a 5.6 shake in Northern Cal on the news. Same time I heard about an 8.something in Russia. No tsunami though. Hope all is quiet now.

I have been in several 4.5 Plus quakes. some Roll and some shake. I was in the 72? north ridge quake as a kid. that was a roller. Landers quake and hundreds of after shocks in 92 93? mix of jarring and shaking.

I told susan about the water ford stuff, she says its really nice stuff and to loss that much is a shame, must have been collecting for a while. glad you are all safe.

Thanks, the Waterford crystal was my inherence from my mother, she had a huge collection.....sure made a mess on the floor.

That was really violent...you could not stand when it was going on...would throw you across the room, guess that is because we were so close to the center...

Yesterday I bought a big tub of spackle.

Damn. At least you and your family are ok. As bad as it sucks to lose special momentos, really everything else is just "stuff." You guys can't be replaced!

Joel and Susan, glad that you are physically ok. Sorry to hear about the Waterford Crystal and the messes that are now in need of clean up. Sounds as if structurally your residence is good. Wishing you the best.

We have friends who live up your way, and were petrified to go into a casino in Las Vegas with us. "No way -- just walking in the door puts the odds against us."

But, like you, they live along the Pacific Rim and are playing the odds every day with plate tectonics. And they don't even know if they are on the red or the black.

Along the rim, one lives with the illusion that the rock is stable (the ocean is what's shifty and dangerous). Hmm, sorry -- as a geologist I must remind folks along the rim -- it all depends on the time frame. The earth along the rim is just as shifty (with shakes, and waves) as the ocean is -- if you hang around long enough (maybe a few hundred years for the earth to severely rock and roll).

So, as you know, just be aware of what can happen, know what to do if you have precursor warning and time to take action, secure the loose stuff, and live with it.-- right?

Someday, over a sundowner, let's chat about quakes. After a second cuppa, perhaps I will share tales of one I experienced -- the ground had waves over a foot high rolling toward me, a mountain shook like a dog dislodging boulders down its flanks leaving dust trails, and I had to brace my feet wide apart to keep from falling (like in the cockpit of a C-Dory over the wake of a freighter).

As boaters, the Rim also has the risk of tsunami -- especially in the Pacific NW -- resulting from plate movements. I previously posted on the Brat site the steps I would recommend (as a former Civil Defense advisor) if on a boat or in a marina and you receive warning signs or a warning message. (The quake could be as far away as Japan to create a damaging tsunami).

Forewarned is forearmed -- eh?
