HI Brent,

Thanks for the tip. It worked. I checked the link, saw there were 2 in Sequim, called the store and confirmed. Put one on hold, and had it in hand in less than 30 minutes. Perfect, because the old one I had, an analog cheapy, bit the dust last week. Good deal. Thanks again.

I have bought a couple of these $10 meters (once from Amazon and once from Fry's) in both cases they met a quick death the first time I tried to check 120vac with them. In the case of the Amazon one, there was a bright flash and a pop. In the one from Fry's there was a pop and the leads blew off in a couple of pieces.

I have decided that it is better to spend the money and get a meter from a reputable manufacturer of electronic equipment (e.g. Fluke, Scope) rather than from some no name Chinese company.

For my primary multimeter, I couldn't agree more. Love my Fluke, and the higher price paid over a decade ago has long since been forgotten. It's a beautiful piece of equipment and a pleasure to use.

However, for tools carried on the boat - I'll always look for bargains. I read tons of good reviews on the UNI-T UT61E, and while it's not dirt cheap like others - it's built extremely well, and has enough features to satisfy folks way more competent than me. Reportedly, it's extremely accurate - not quite to the level of higher end units, but much more so than anything else in it's price range.

My only complaint - it doesn't have auto off. The batteries do last a looong time, even when you forget and leave it on - but I can't remember the last time I changed them in my Fluke. I've swapped them out a couple times in the two years I've owned the UT61E.

It's widely available on eBay as well as the Amazon link above. The vendors offering the best price ship directly from China, so it takes a couple weeks to get. And lastly - here's Part 1 of a very detailed review of the unit from somebody who knows these things better than most of us.

I have a Fluke 77 that was around $250 new, 20 years ago. Still going strong.

You can get a DVM at Harbor Fright for $3.99, but, should you?

I also still use a Simpson VOM analog meter, too, which is at least 30 years old.

I've bought at least eight under-$10 DVMs for a friend...she seldom gets several months from them.
