Dumb Ideas?

I am wondering if we need a new forum called "Dumb Ideas".

Diana and I have a large double kayak (Necky Tofino) that we have wanted to take with us on cruises. The problem is that it is 20' long and weighs in at close to 100 pounds. I have been tossing around various ideas on how to handle the beast when on the move. I don't want to put it on top of the CDory due to the weight and awkwardness of it, and i don't want to be restricted to low speeds in order to tow the kayak.

I have been thinking about building a foam cradle that would sit on top of the port lazarette, and hold either the bow or stern of the kayak so we could get up on a plane and move. I have no idea how that would affect balance or steering, and it probably comes in as a candidate for the proposed new "Dumb Idea" forum. Has anyone out there tried anything like this? Did it work?

Kind Regards,

Steve

Well, Steve, best not ask for things if you REALLY don't want them. I don't think this is a "Dumb Idea" but you asked for it!! (Wasn't there a TV program named that?? ) No, not Dumb Idea, but "You asked for It!. Not many of us here remember that far ago. I think it may have been even before TV was invented.... :?:

Actually, I think you'd look like the Oscar Meyer Weinermobile on the water!! Please post a picture and we'll poll everyone to see if they think it's a "Dumb Idea"..... :cry Personally, I :love it!!

I put this in "That's Life" so no non-brats could see if we think we're dumb or not!! :smilep :wink

OH, I don't know about that Bob. Remember putting Really Big Outboards on a Ranger 21EC to make it do 30-40 knots? Maybe not "dumb" but not exactly "smart"!

Trying to leave Spokane in December on an RV trip would qualify!

We have been trying to dig out since the 17th and finally got away today. We were to join an RV caravan to see the Rose Parade-had to cancel that but we can still make another caravan to Mexico. Hope to be in south Texas by the 10th of Jan.

Ken, are we going to miss you in Seattle, (SBS CBGT 09)? Hope not, and travel safe.

Back to Dumb ideas, that might not be. We have friends who pull the Walker Bay dink up, (bow onto swim step), secure it there, and travel at planning speeds with no problem. It rides just off center and settles between the center wave and the transom wave.

Harvey,
Sorry I will miss the SBS CBGT. First one I have missed. We are at an RV park in Grants Pass, Or tonight and if the forecast holds for Siskiyou Pass we will shoot over tomorrow morning and hit the land of warm weather by afternoon.

Ken, sounds like you got out of Spokane just in time. It was a small window. We crossed the state same day, only light snow over the I90 pass into Seattle. Have a great trip south, and don't forget to take a snowball off the Siskiyou Pass down to Jim, so he can remember and enjoy what he is missing :xnaughty

It was sunny and a "balmy" 63 f here yesterday- looking for some more of the same today. :smiled
Have a safe and fun trip.

Hi Charlie,

I think I am going to try the foam saddle on the lazarette idea. I will probably tie it stern to, as the rudder on the Necky doesn't fold all the way up on the aft deck. If it works, I will post a photo, if not... well, probably no photo.

Steve

Steve, are you going to have the foam saddle pivot, or the kayak pivot in the foam saddle or no pivot and have the "kayak bow" guyed to the stern cleats to keep it perpendicular to the transom?

Best of luck,

Harvey
