Draw backs to buying a boat in Canada

Being from the U.S. I wondered if there were any glaring issues about someone from the U.S. buying a boat in Canada and bringing it back to the U.S. Any special paper work required? Tax issues? Reasons why you should avoid this etc.?

Your strong dollar is a good reason to import a boat. Not sure about your state taxes but pretty simple procedure at the border I'll bet. You'll need a Bill of sale and proof of pollution standards met and 1% duty likely. Re-importing a US built boat (c dory) would likely be a snap. George
 
The exchange is good enough now, we were just discussing selling our boat down here and buying a newer version in Canada.

We decided it was too much trouble when our boat is well sorted and we are attached to it. Very tempting though.


If the USD was as strong when we were looking I wouldn't have hesitated to shop north of the border.
 
Something about Honda Motors and warrantee issues between the Canadian Honda Motors and the US Honda Motors. This may all be a dead issue for motors purchased now....but seems I recall this being an issue a few years back.

Someone in the PNW help me out here.... If the motor is out of warrantee by age... I see no warrantee issues. ....and...it was only a Honda issue.

Just a flash back and thought.
 
Just make sure you've got all your bases covered with regards to the trailer that you plan on bringing your new boat back with. We have imported a number of boats from the USA to Canada and were pleasantly surprised to find out the Wa State motor vehicle dept allows anyone to purchase a temporary permit for trailers. I'm not so sure how that works when it's coming FROM this side. BTW, there aren't a heck of a lot of C-Dory boats up here. We wish there were more, or at least some.
 
Dave, if you come up to Canada to buy your Ranger Tug - they will not let you across the border until you take me for a ride in it. :mrgreen: :mrgreen:
