Dog owners only.

Very well said Dan. That really hits home with me because I feel it and have lived it, but would probably have trouble expressing it as well.

They are an endless source of satisfaction, joy, companionship and trust and it truly runs in both directions. A special bond to be sure.

Thanks

Beautiful post, Dan.

There have only been a couple years in my life I've not had at least one dog. Those years were, without a doubt, the least memorable.

Dan,

This really hits home with me right now. We just had to put our German Shorthair mix down last week after 1 1/2 years of treatment for extreme allergies. He was a very loving, intelligent dog and I miss him alot. Eventhough it was hard to go through what we did this last year, I would do it again in a heartbeat.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Julie

Mind if I briefly crash the doghouse? Dan, dare I say it, that really was sweet. Very touching, tender and true. And I know another brand of four on the floor that gives me the same joy and self-discovery.

Catman,

I too have quite the love for cats. Before I had kids, my friends used to joke that my cats were my kids. They bought me a coffee mug one time that says: Ask me about the cute thing my cat did because I'll tell you anyway!
I love all animals. When we were kids, we brought a goat home one time and asked if we could keep it!

Very nice Dan. It is amazing what these little creatures give to us.

Anyone read the book Dog Is My Co-Pilot, Great Writers on the World's Oldest Friendship? Good stuff. I really enjoyed the story by Pam Houston about her Irish wolfhound and the lessons the dog taught her about life. I laughed and I cried. Dan, your piece could be a chapter in the book!

Thanks. Robbi

No kiddin'...after two years of trying, my two youngest girls just gave me a dead gopher!

Such massive praise and treats have seldom been lavished upon my wonderful hounds. "Kill 'em all !!!" was the battle cry!

I think we need a cat thread here also. What do you think Catman? When we take ownership of the new 25, Nikko, our cat, will be coming along on some cruises. (She doesn't know this yet, so don't spill the beans)

No disrespect to you dog people, or bird people, or rodent people etc either. I am a cat person (maybe not THE cat guy!) too. And our cats are boat cats! Mine also like to help me type too - like right now! And play the piano. According to another post, I guess dogs can do that too! The cats do not speak dog though. They do try to speak to rodents and birds.

To all the C.A.T. folks out there..... Did you know that one of Oscar and Skipper's (Lhasa Apso) cutest traits are their cat shaped paws??? Check them out next time you see them.

Pat, is that a recent picture of Oscar? He definately is a cutie but sooooo small! :D Skipper now weighs in at 23lbs. Hope they play well this summer when we meet up.

Dan , glad you started this thread and agree wholeheartedly with the thoughts you expressed so eloquently. I would add one more area in which our dogs have educated us, and that is in helping us to be better parents. Having, living with, and training dogs before we were married and before we had kids helped Kathy and me to be better parents. Being consistent, meaning what you say but using positive reinforcement to get the behavior you want, recognizing the need for play, exercise, and stimulation, etc. -- these are all dog training/ownership skills that translate pretty effectively into raising good kids. Moreover, I think when our second came along it wasn't as much of a shock to our first, "only" child because she had had to share our attention with four four-legged "siblings" before her sisiter was born.

As Mark Twain once said, "I aspire to be the kind of man my dog thinks I am."

Best wishes,
