dog onboard

I took Shadow, my 155 lb. Great Dane, just about everywhere I went with my CD-22 for about 10 years, 1995-2005.

Always had to take her ashore to do her business, and had to use a large cooler as a step-down and step-up to get her into and out of the boat.

She slept in the v-berth, while I used the dinette convertible berth, a great arrangement, since my wife never liked sleeping on the boat (preferred our 38 foot motorhome, motels, hotels, cruise ships, etc. (!)

Now I have Pepper, a Jack Russell/Fox Terrier mix that enjoys the boat with me as well as our much larger Sea Ray.

Wouldn't be the same without dem' dogs! :lol:

Jake pretty much lives on the cockpit. That is until the engine starts and then he heads for the v-berth. We have given up trying to stop him. We spread a cover over the berth before we start the engine now.

Winds started out this morning at 30 with gusts to 36, not much chance of finishing the ladder work out on the boat house. I have about 45 minutes of work at the top of a step ladder to finish the cables for the sling lift. Still have white caps on the bay....staying off the ladder until the wind drops some more.

I'd woof but then I'd really be in the doghouse....and we ain't got no doghouse....therefore I'm guessin' I'd be out in the cold.....errr...change that I'd be out on the boat.... :lol: .

And the Woof Crowd-

1. isn't High Maintenance,

2. contributes more companionship per $$$ spent,

3. doesn't second guess anything you do, and

4. doesn't turn your vacation into an agenda planning ordeal like entertaining some relatives might!

I'll stick with the Dog on the Boat, and leave the Wife Home in Her Castle, Thank You! :smiled

Heard a new CW song today named (I think), "Wish my wife loved me like my dog does".... :dog :love :lips :hug2 Probably not destined to be a classic but some truisms within! :mrgreen:

We've taken Andy, our 20lb Silky Terrier, out once on the boat, to the CBGT in Oriental NC. He loves to ride in the car, put him on the boat at the Marina for the first time and the first time (no engines running, not underway) he puked! :cry . Obviously not a sailor, although he rode the 25 miles and back to Morehead City the next day with no problems. He just doesn't like the boat and loud noises. The cats would probably be fine but 4 cats :cat :cat :cat :cat :disgust on a TomCat would not do well. Too small!

As Jim said, it depends on on individual preference! And the critters themselves!

Significant Other or furry family member? I'll take both, thanks. The wind was howling today, occasional spitting rain; the Blonde and I went out for a while, but we left little Izzy at home. She has done some boat time with us since we've been back, but figured today would be a bit bouncy... we figured right. :wink:

I know what you mean about people demanding that you handle your dog their way... Pasta poodle has been with us since he was weaned from his momma... He thinks he is people... He wears a collar but is on a leash maybe twice a year... He is controlled by voice...
One Sunday morning they were having a big doings at the airport and I was there with Pasta - I had just finished changing the oil and filter on the engines... As we worked our way through the heavy crowd with Pasta sticking right behind me, from my hangar towards the FBO in search of some coffee, this woman accosted me almost screeching...
" Why isn't he on a leash? He's going to bite someone."
I said "Pasta, sit.", he sat...
"Umm, he doesn't need a leash and he doesn't bite, maam."
Her near screeching brought lots of attention from the crowd.. Pasta was there at my right heel, probably wondering what her problem was...
"But he'll run away."
"No maam, he won't run away... He stays right with me." Which is true around a crowd... When we are alone he wanders a bit further but never lets me out of his sight..
Anyway, she goes on like that for a couple of minutes and I am getting annoyed... Pasta is sitting there in the July sun, panting and I 'need' some coffee...
Finally she said, "Boy, if I unhooked the leash my dog would be in the next county."
After being subjected to her for a couple of minutes I totally understood her dog's desire to leave - heck, I was annoyed...
I said, "Maybe he doesn't want to be YOUR dog. Pasta, come." and walked off through the crowd with Pasta following at my heel...

Years back we kept a sailboat up on Tawas Bay in Michigan at the yacht club... The club had a strict policy that all dogs had to be on a leash at all times - this was long before we had Pasta... A couple there had an older Golden that was just a sweetheart... The dog was named Honey... So, they would get off the boat in the morning, snap the leash on honey's collar, fold the excess leash neatly in a bow and hold it crosswise at the dogs nose and say, "Honey, hold your leash." The dog would delicately take the folded leash between her front teeth and keep it there... Then they would walk to the clubhouse for breakfast, Honey leading the way, holding her leash... If they stopped to talk to anyone, Honey would sit down patiently, always holding the leash in her teeth...

Of course, there came the time when one busybody just had to make an issue of it, during the annual members meeting... She jumped up and made a motion that Honey be banned from the club for violation of the leash rule... Not a voice spoke up to second her motion... Finally in exasperation she snaps, "I am entitled to a second so there can be a vote!"
From somewhere in the silent crowd came a small voice, "If we put a leash in your mouth will you be as quiet as Honey?" The lady went storming out and next spring, she and her boat were gone... Honey was still holding her leash...

Not Honey, but Maggie, a California cruising Golden, at Echo Bay Marina. Echo Bay had the same leash law as denny-o describes.
 
Enjoyed the stories Denny....good chuckle. The last companion on our boat was a Cocker Spaniel also named Honey. Always a smile to my face when the ladies on the dock would turn their heads towards me when I called out Honey's name.
