Diesel outboard

If the price of them really gets down to gas repower land, or even just a 1/4th or so more, and they have good fuel burn numbers and proven longevity, then you're going to see lots of them hanging on the back of boats.

Going to take awhile for them to be enough fielded and for long enough to demonstrate longevity. Just because it's a diesel, doesn't mean it will last any longer than a gas engine.

Those old cast iron diesels that are relatively low hp/lb last forever because they are under pretty low stress (for an engine). The small high power diesels don't last as long. All the high tech stuff on modern diesels also are where a lot of the problems occur, not with the stuff inside the block.

The diesel outboard in this thread seems to have a more complicated output and cooling setup than a typical gas O/B. Wonder if there'll be some trouble there.
