Hi,
I was wondering about diesel fuel additives for tow vehicles and wanted to know what brands people were using and if folks thought they were really necessary.

My take - biocides are never a bad idea, but are probably more important if your truck sits for long periods of time giving the critters a chance to grow. There are many biocides on the market that get decent reviews, and they're not that expensive per treatment. I use Stanadyne - it was referred to me by one of the fleet guys where I work, and a jug lasts me a couple years.

Additionally, a tank of B100 on occasion will keep things very clean. Biodiesel is an excellent solvent - I run a tank about every six months, just prior to servicing my fuel filters.
 
I am using Stanadyne as well.

A bit OT: Someone posted that they lost their power steering pump on a Ford diesel recently. I just replaced mine due to a good leak at a bit under 80k miles.
 
Stanadyne here as well. Also, with the newer fuels in both pick-ups and tractors, combines etc. we change fuel filters at every other oil change. If lift pump has trouble pushing enough fuel to the injection pump, the injection pump tries to pull fuel to itself and will shorten its' life. Very expensive item!
 
If my towing truck sits idle for any length of time--I use PRI D and Startron.

For the RV, where I am running every day--no additive. Just get fuel at truck stops with high volume. My impression is that on the road truckers do not use additives.
 
I put about 4oz of Opti-lube (summer blend) in each tank (truck and bobcat). Does it work? I don't know, but I have "diesel nut" freinds who swear by it. No problems though.
 
PRID for me [we are a dealer],previously Power Service and Stanadyne every tank . Never had a problem , and I drive the crap out of my trucks .I long for low sulfur diesel. The truck runs better on it , getting harder to find .

Let me be the contrarian here...
We have multiple diesels on the farm... I never use any kind of additive... They always start and run, even the bulldozer that will sit for a year at a time without running... Keep the tank full right up to the filler neck to preclude condensate from building up and forget about it...
Levitation was just started last week after sitting for 8 months... The fuel filter is crystal clear...
