... Butane has one more carbon molecule than Propane and burns with more smoke......it is not at all rare to see a motorhome with a soot stripe up from the heater exhaust...you know they have been to Mexico where you can not buy Propane...

I do not see that around here. Properly orificed, neither butane nor propane should soot up. I suspect those burners need servicing.

I do agree that butane canisters suck in freezing weather. Many a backpacking morning I got stuck with cannister warmup duty. Ugh!

Hi Mel, we finally have signal and I'm glad to see you're posting. As we discussed, you're seeing the tremendous level of support and knowledge that resides in the Brat community.

We're in Valley of Fire now, running around with the long lenses and chasing the bighorn rams (lots of them). Rod and Leslie headed back to Whidbey Island this morning.

Safe journeys and kind regards!

Steve

I purchased the Espar and installed before we left Calif for Alaska. We slept on the boat every night on the road but one. During freezing temps in N. Canada it kept us comfortable. It has the digital controller, and I can't say I am impressed with how well it controls the inside temp. It seems to me the differential between on and off is quite wide. I need to do some more testing to be sure.

Again thanks for the input all. I did buy the Espar from the fellow in Fairbanks. Best price I could find. And he was always willing to answer my do-in-yourselfer questions. The instructions were quite complete too. His forte is truck installations so at times his ignorance showed, but in the end it all worked.

Joel, I have a butane stove, and have no problem finding Butane. While I have seen it at a few recreation stores, I buy it cheaply from Amazon in cases of a dozen.

I also have the Webasto Heater, and have used it down to 33 degrees. Keeps the boat warm, but still the problem with condensation...Colby

Asian corner stores are a good source for buying butane, and it's the cheapest you will find. But they can be unhelpful if you want to buy a case or two.

Martin.
