Da Digs

Bill: Looks like the "barn" is coming along great. That is truly a very nice sturcture for sure. Does not look like you are far at all from the siding days. Enjoying watching this. Thanks for the updates.

Just got back from a week+ of fun in WA. Here's a link to 5 pages of the latest pics of Da Digs...a few samples are below.

We're just about done, at least insofar as the contractor work goes. Paint goes on in the next couple months, then comes building out the interior over the next couple years. Still, the only thing lacking is cooking facilities at this point...we're just about ready to sell the RV and stay in the barn.

Pic forwarded to me by the painter - Da Barn be green!

Permit is signed off, but we didn't pull one for occupancy - just a garage/storage area. We'll probably start on the interior next year - have until 4/2011 to make it inhabitable...

What is the size of the living area? Only 5yrs - It will go fast.

4 years, 8 months, 7 days - not that anyone's counting...:smilep

The footprint is 32x40 - upstairs floorplan we've decided on is attached. I posted one earlier that had two baths upstairs, but with a bath downstairs in the garage/shop area, and construction cost realities setting in, we changed the upstairs to a 2BR/1BA configuration.

Oh - and we got rid of the POS RV mentioned here...got just enough to pay for the paint job.

I love the barn. But that is TOO MUCH grass to mow! Yikes!

Heh...for a CA brown hill dweller, I look at 5 acres of mowing green grass as a welcome chore. Particularly when done so with a 6' brush hog, seated in Da Kubota.

Just don't git much better than that...I can even drink and drive!

Not recommended! I did it once while mowing, guess it was too hot or too much :beer :beer but after an hour or so, on one long pass, I figured I could close my eyes for a little snooze and didn't wake up until the tree hit the front of my mower. Luckily, I was on my lilttle Simplicity mower and not the big Kubota tractor!

This is crazy.... Have spent the last 2 full days in Clarksville, TN looking for Sherryl and I a place to live...with her new job at Austin Pea State Univ. Well... looking around at all the homes and what they cost I thought many times what we need is a barn gig like Bill's. Could not wait to get some internet time to reflect on this. I told Sherryl what we needed was about a 1200' house....and a 5,000 foot garage... and some room without 97 neighbors, kids, dogs and pimped out 4 cylinder cars making all kinda noise. At least our 60/70's muscle cars sounded strong....and really were fast....not just land bound loud and slow wasp ya wanta take yer front bumper to.

Anywho.... then thought with all the houseing shortages in Clarksville, the 17th fastest growing city in America, which is also in Montgomery County TN,,,in the top 100 fastest growing counties in America.... and where folks are on waiting list for a nice clean 800 sq ft apartment for $850 a month.... that my job should be to buy a 30 acre farm, build me a barn/loft house on it....and then just build me "farm atmosphere" neighborhood....with garage underneath, home on top type homes. And then I flashed back to Brother Bill's barn....

Who knows... Bill.... I might need to fly out for a site visit man.

You need one like Bill's or mine Byrdman. 700 Sq Ft apartment, boat garage and double one for workshop. I've still got a set of the plans!

On the other hand, he might just wind up partly building the barn, partly building his riverboat plans, and wind up with an ARK, and we'd all have to take to the boats for 40 days and 40 nights!

A lot of good advice there, Pat. You wouldn't need that $1500 StairMaster sitting unused in your garage, with stairs like that . . . .

Of course, you could get a dumbwaiter like Charlie did. Hey Charlie, did that ex marine you hired ever wise up?

Well... for a hunting camp my Dad friend had on a cabin in the Smokey Mtn area... we had a 12volt battery, hooked to a davit with a hard flat steel "pan" on it to pull up the firewood... About a bottle or two of merlot later, we had "improved it", built us an "elevator".... all be it really ruff looking, it worked.

Yes..Charlie...send me the plans
