We leave tomorrow for Vienna for a 1,000 km cruise up the Danube, across the Main canal, and down the Rhine to Amsterdam. We wanted to ship our C-Dory across for the summer, but the expense was too much for our budget. We'll report on our return to share the experience with others who have done the trip or may want to do one in the future.
 
You two always come up with interesting trips! Are you renting a canal boat or going on a passenger cruiseboat? Fixed itinerary or serendipitous? It will be fun following along on your website.

Jim - we are passengers on a small boat - it will be stopping at villages and towns en route and then we hop off and explore. My ancestors came from the Palatine in the Rhine Valley back in 1710 - we hope to get up to the 'hometown.'

Actually, you can contemplate it now. You just have to wait 2 years, 9 months and 10 days to EXECUTE something like that.

Could you tell us what the quotes were for shipping your C-Dory to Europe?
 
Larry - we couldn't find any rates, in containers or on a barge, cheaper than $5,000+-. It might be possible to load two 22-foot C-Dorys into a container and split the cost - but it would be mighty tight and perhaps not a good idea if there were rough seas. We thought it would be great to ship over, spend two or three summers cruising the waterways of Europe, and perhaps then sell over there to avoid the costs of return shipping. But, it finally dawned on us that maybe it would be much less costly to buy a used boat over there, use it two or three summers, and re-sell it.

Anyway, when we hit on the idea of doing a 'commercial' trip on the rivers, and maybe charter canal boats for more cruising, that seemed the best way. So we chartered in England and now are on a commercial boat for this trip.

Y'all have a great trip!!! My ancestors too came from the area in 1710 -- when you get up this way we can have a great old chatfest. I've done a ton of research in that area while doing my genealogy. Dusty
 
Dusty - maybe we're cousins? My folks settled along the Hudson River, at Saugerties, NY with the some of the other Palatines who came over on the Wonder Fleet. My, we even look a little alike, eh?
 
Retirement must be great. I only have 5 or 6 years to go, unless someone steals our retirement.
 
Retirement is the best job I ever held. Hours are wonderful but the pay is sometimes a little shaky.
My job this winter is to crush aluminum cans in this RV resort each morning. It takes approx. an hour. Then to the bistro for free coffee and BS with the other guys. Back to my RV to read the paper and another cup. In the afternoon it is the pool and hot tub. Dinner, a little TV watching or a hockey game on the computer from Alaska. To bed.
Up in the morning for another day.....etc.
In the summer it is back to Alaska to try and wear out the C-Dory fishing for salmon and halibut.
I pinch myself each morning to make sure it is me having this wonderful life after a lifetime of real work.
I wish you all the same opportunity and success in achieving it.
The money we get from the aluminum cans is donated to the local food bank. Approx. $4500 each winter. It is our little way of giving back.

We are looking forward to hearing all about your trip! I was stationed in the Main River area in the late 60's, and very impressed with the progress made by the Germans. Solar pannels and wind towers everywhere and great enginering in all respects. Great food, beer and wonderful, smart people. Floating throught history!

For those who would like some reading I would recommend A TRAMP ABROAD by Mark Twain and THE IMPROBABLE VOYAGE by Tristan Jones.
 
Bill, I don't have a "Fiero" on my list. Do you have the full name of your 1710 ancestor? Cuz Dusty
