Critter Corner

I found a site listing the most intelligent and least intelligent dogs. Of the top and bottom ten, we've owned the Border Collie and a Lab, and they definitely deserve their places on the list. Neighbors owned an Afghan and I gotta agree completely with the study findings there as well. If dogs are like their masters, Brittany Spears must own an Afghan....

Baxter! How did they know?!!? I might add "Looks puzzled when called. Slow on house breaking. Will never catch a frisbee." His saving grace is he is so durn cute and affectionate!

Require more than 80 repetitions to understand a new command. Obey first commands less than 25 % of the time.

We currently own the #1 dog, Border Collie, and will be adding the #8 dog, Papillon, to our family in January. It is hard having dogs that are smarter than their owners  !!

Molly the catboat cat... do they get any more laid back than this?

Plus, she enjoys cruising with us on Wild Blue. She lets us know when we've been traveling too long without a break... or when the ride is getting too rough... lowers my blood pressure... and is better than a lap blanket when it's chilly. :cat

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Hi Tom.... why should SHE? None of her owners nor her owners' friends do!! Thank Goodness...

Merry Christmas and Seasons Greetings to you and Kathy and kids and critters!

You know, when my cat's happy, I'm happy. :cat

Brock, that must mean that you are always happy, because that cat that was sleeping on top of "Bambina" at the Bellingham gathering was certainly the happiest cat I've ever seen! It had that permanent happy grin on its' face!

Holy cow. It's pouring down rain, I'm ready to count sheep and in pops Buster, soaking wet with blood all over his chest. We're drying and cleaning him, and assessing the damage.
:(

Brock - hope this story has a happy ending for Buster...Baxter scooted out the door sans leash this afternoon, my carelessness, and ran across the street where he started annoying the two mean dogs that live there, in his stupid, friendly, little puppy way - and he does not come when called (you know, it is the breed, more than 80 reps to learn a command, obeys less than 25% on the first command, etc.) - I thought he was going to get mauled, the big dog was controlling him, pinning him, and so forth, while the little mean blue one was circling around behind - I crawled under the fence through the horse poop and corraled the little guy just in the nick of time I think...anxious moment or two though.

Pat, thank goodness... :D Our Andy (Silky Terrier) is the same way, a sweet little guy but no fear of cars, other doggies, or anything. Gotta watch him every minute... :love :dog :dog and kitties too.. :love :cat

Turns out Buster's OK, thank goodness. After some hours, he cleaned up real good. I thought I'd wait a day or two to assess the bites, see if abcesses appear. None so far. Maybe I've saved $200, and he needed only TLC.

Pat, wasn't Wednesday's experience also a Green Acres episode? Regardless, I'm sure glad you corralled Baxter before them big bullies decided to bite. Nice recovery, dad.

Subject: Wisdom from a 4 year old

Why Dogs Don't Live As Long As People

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a
ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's
owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy,
Shane, were all very much attached to Belker and they
were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I
told the family there were no miracles left for
Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia
procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made
arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it
would be good for the four-year-old Shane to observe
the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn
something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat
as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so
calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I
wondered if he understood what was going on.

Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.
The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition
without any difficulty or confusion.

We sat together for a while after Belker's death,
wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives
are shorter than human lives.

Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I
know why."

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his
mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more
comforting explanation.

He said, "People are born so that they can learn how
to live a good life like loving everybody all the time
and being nice, right?"

The four-year-old continued, "Well, dogs already know
how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."

Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak
kindly.
