Critter Corner

Brought home the new Element today. With 25 miles on the odometer, the hounds were loaded up and taken out for a run. With 30 miles on the odometer, they were back in the car - nice and muddy from our heavy rains the last couple of days. Back home with 35 miles on the clock, the rear windows have the requisite number of nose prints.

We had that "new car smell" for about an hour.

That's neat! Don't worry about the mess. When you take it in for your complimentary first service they will clean it all up again.

Believe it or not, you can just hose it out. No kidding.

Yeah...but I like the smell of wet dogs.

Probably not the fragrance to pick for your wife's perfume.

Congrats on the new ride - looks like the furry kids approve! :D

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Did you get the AWD model for those occasional PNW snowfalls?

Yup.

Got the harness option as well. If it gets really nasty, I'll just hook up the hounds and yell "Mush!"

Try that with a cat.

Cats don't do the pulling, they ride inside with the heater running. And say things like, "Ohhh, it looks cold out there." :cat

Of course, you have enough for a "three dog night." :D

Little Izzy said, "Tell Bill his dogs look nice. And BIG. Bet they drool a lot and poop big, too. Does Bill have a REALLY BIG lap so they'll fit on there?" She's still just a little girl, so some of this stuff fascinates her.

Regarding the Element: When I first saw one years ago, I thought, "That's odd looking." I've come to really appreciate how functional it can be. Have you tried all the "64 different space options"? I really like how you can open up that space back there.

Best wishes,
Jim & Izzy

Cool, neat & sweet! Looks like a fun time Bill. Congrats on the new ride for the dogs. Looking at the pic I do not see one of those "if in a wreck keep things in the back in the back and not beating you about the head and shoulders" cage looking things. So, when you travel, do the dogs just have free roam space in the back? Dogs that size would hurt during a sudden impact stop. Just wondering...?

Also, ever wonder why a dog hates to have anyone blow in their face, but, the minute you start out down the road they can not wait to get their heads out the windows?

Nice ride, enjoy and may all your trips be fun and safe Bill.

Hey Bill, our son got the funky "burnt orange". Dotty and I will be driving it down to Chula Vista in early April for the eCamper conversion.

Points well taken, Byrdman - crates, barriers and restraints are all wise choices. We don't use them all the time, admittedly out of convenience.

For the trips to the running area near us - we simply don't worry about it. It's about two miles away, down a very lightly traveled 35MPH road.

Crates are great, and I use them when transporting the dogs in the truck. Not really an option in the Element, though - three will just barely fit back there, but access is a complete pain for the one up front, and they leave no room for anything else.

We will be getting a barrier in the car, just haven't decided which one yet. It will be a net of some sort...they're actually more effective than those "jail bars" in an emergency stop, as they have more secure fastening points. The bars typically use compression against the walls and roof, which a good solid blow will easily take out. The nets are also far easier to remove and store in the car when not needed/wanted.

The Kurgo is probably what we'll get - it's a simple, cheap and effective design.

Still, the design of the Element is definitely better than wagons I've owned and seen in this regard. Reason being - the dogs sit much lower in the back, so an emergency stop most likely sends them to the back of the seats - not over the top. It's more like a van in that regard.

Ahhh yes..."Citrus" they call it. I like it, but it was vetoed with no chance for negotiation in the Da Nag household.

I like the admittedly odd looks of the car - Dana, not so much. She was converted by the test drive and functionality, but winces as she walks towards it.

Along those lines...we're one of those dorky couples who name their cars. Little Rocket, Trixie and Betsy came before the Element. When Dana told her friend what we were getting, she got a lukewarm reception..."Oh - you're getting one of those clown cars."

So, this one was easy - we welcome "Bozo" to the fold.

Heh...from your description, it sounds like I married a cat. She's a little easier on the furniture, though.

Hmmm...that didn't sound quite right.

Careful, she might turn into a Cougar, Bill, and she could get away with it.

Did you mention to her that the Element can be easily towed four wheels down?

Roger -- if you miss a shot do your dogs turn and look at you with a "You Dumb SOB" look?

Used to hunt over a black lab that could shame you into quitting hunting if a goose or duck did not hit the water after every trigger pull.
