Crew seat refit

Hello. I currently own only sailboats, but hope to acquire a recent vintage CD22 Cruiser in the next while. I am fine with an older model except for the lack of a forward facing crew seat. Not a lot of CD22's here in Bozeman, so I wanted to ask if the construction of the forward dinette seat base is a more or less modular plywood unit on the pre 2002 models. I thought I might be able to modify it or build a new sliding base/backrest to replicate (or approximate) the reversible option in the newer boats. My wife needs to sit forward and face forward while I'm at the helm, and I (an accomplished 67 year old snorer!) need to be able to bed down in the convertible dinette berth. We would also like to be able to use the dinette in its normal configuration for meals. Any thoughts? (about the feasibility of this mod, not our sleeping arrangements! They are just the sleeping arrangements, you know...).

Has any body else tried this? Thanks for any suggestions/comments.

Thanks so much, Joe and Phil. Plenty of info there! I am pretty much a techno-dufus when it comes to properly using this electronic thing, but now, thanks to you, not only do I have an answer to my question, but I am aware of much more of the potential of this great website. Wow! What a fantastic resource.

Ferd - These are great boats - you need to attend a CBGT to see a 22 Cruiser. These folks are very kind and welcoming.

Check out the "C-Brat Cruises and Gatherings" link on this forum - you and Beth should attend a CBGT to see what various owners have done with their boats. Tricia and I attended the Bellingham CBGT last summer and we learned alot (and were treated wonderfully by all - GREAT People). We will have a 22 in a few years.

A Yellowstone Lake get together appears to be coalescing and that may be a good thing you to see - it's just a 100 miles or so for you to travel and I'm certain a 22 owner would 'take you under their wing' so to speak...

Lastly, we always thought it was Beth that was the snorer - thanks for straightening us out :wink: - I'm the snorer in this family, perhaps you have heard ME (the Overlook Lane Log Sawyer).

Ferd - If the dates (Aug. 21-24) fit your schedule, bring your sailboat up to the Lake, if you can step your mast. i.e.,(don't know what kind of sailboat(s) you have) and join us. There will be a variety of C-Dory boats to inspect, and all of them will have modifications to make them more liveable and useable. I suspect that the variety of modifications will be significant. Regarding a forward facing seat in the CD-22, I had a 1996 model which I modified to face the port seat forward. It was functional to an extent, but it did not impress the C-Dory factory folks (Scott and company), and they soon came out with their own version. I never saw Tyboo's modification, before he stepped up to the 25' CD. It would be easier to show you what I did than describe in writing. I have photos somewhere. I haven't progressed to a digital camera yet. Anyway, come to Yellowstone, if for only a drive up and meet some non-snooty, down to earth boaters. John
 
Boy, Ben and John, would ever I love to get to either the Yellowstone or Bellingham get-together. Unfortunately, our long planned vacation has us hiking on the Olympic peninsula during the former, and arriving in Bellingham on 20 August, three days after the latter! Can you believe it? But I'm sure we'll find a couple of 22's somewhere to gawk at (I see lots of 'em on my annual San Juans/Gulf Islands sailing trip, but Beth has really only seen...... and loved....... a friend's 16 Cruiser, which is too small for our needs), and be able get to one of the larger gatherings sometime soon. Every owner I have met has been, as you say, unpretentious and super friendly, and Les Lampman on Whidbey Island WA is a fantastic guy. Sorry he no longer carries them.

My Dinette Conversion (see photos) does not provide a forward-facing crew seat. Rather, it is "side-facing." But we love it; it serves us very well. The crew and captain can maintain easy communication. And the lounge seat makes a wonderful place for a nap, with no makeup or fuss. (I had a nice nap there one day this week, while drifting on L. Ontario!)

Nice job on your forward-facing seat project. I like your track system. In one of the photos, you asked how you should attach the cushion to the table. On our CD-22, there is a 3-4 inch tie sewn into the seam with a snap (female end) at the end of the tie. The tie is then wrapped around the folded down section of the table and the snap is snapped into the male snap section which is screwed onto the back of the part of the table. It holds it into place very nicely. Sorry I don't have a photo.

Yup - I get it. :idea
I knew there had to be some way of working it out with snaps/velcro. I know someone with the sewing skills and I'll work out the rest.
I'll post a photo when I get her done.
