credit card meltdown

I've been happy with BECU for the past eight years. Got our mortgage and car loan there and they have almost as many little outlets as Starbucks. Painless website for bill paying etc. and human customer service always available and helpful. When I talk to them the only foreign accent is mine.

I have had the pleasure of experiencing the same type of treatment from Chase.

My wife and I also have a high fico score, been longtime Chase Mastercard holders--never late, etc. Our 4.5% fixed rate mortgage is also with Chase.

A few years ago...I got the Chase 3.9% transfer offer for the life of the loan/transfer. I had been paying it down, always paid more...didn't owe that much when I seen my next statement and this is what happened(late last year or early this year--can't remember).

The minumum payment went from 3% to 5%, plus an adminstration "fee" was added (I think it was $10)...this admin fee accrues interest at the normal rate (whatever that is) and every month the admin fee is added.

so 10 dollars every month + interest, etc, etc...

I called and this is what my options were---accept a higher interest rate (lose the 3.9%) and the $10 fee will stop and they will credit me the $10 they just charged me and my minimum payment will stay at 3% of the balance---or pay the balance in full and close the account.

Guess which one I chose?

I just recently read that the government got involved and made Chase reverse the admin fee charging and reimburse what they had taken.

They will never get my business again.

I started doing more business with my local Federal Credit Union. Should have done it in the first place.

Yes, the answer to Bank of America and Chase and other banks is your local credit union. Ours is Sno Falls Credit Union, which started as a Weyerhaeuser Employee credit union. But when the mill closed the credit union opened up to all residents of Snoqualmie Valley. I am trying to get Patty to move everything to the credit union, but she still clings to the Alaska Airlines VISA through Bank of America. When BoA pulls the same thing on us, we will be gone in a heartbeat. BoA is too stupid and greedy to get it. The credit union has no incentive to screw you because you as a shareholder are one of the owners. We have a local board of directors, and while they have to stay solvent, they cannot get away with being arrogant assholes.

Well said, my friend!

Give 'em the coveted AA Award!

There is no BECU office in Anacortes. Am wondering how easy it is to have a relationship with a financial institution where you have to drive an hour to the nearest office? Anyone with that kind of experience?

Warren,

There is a BECU branch in the Safeway in Mount Vernon at the College St offramp from I-5. Once you have an account opened, you can do almost all business by computer, phone, or mail.

Credit Unions are no panacea either...I've had problems with two local ones, as well as a couple of the banks listed by others here.

Another good credit union, available to anyone - PenFed. Anyone can join. If you're not in one of the "free" classes (Gov't employee, Military, etc.), you simply join the National Military Family Association (NMFA) for a one-time fee - $25, if memory serves.

Warren, in this day and age of computers, why in the world would you
drive anywhere to get to an office? I haven't been inside a Navy Federal Credit Union office in years. Last year, I refinanced this house (after I closed out a construction loan from a local bank) with them, totally over the internet. They recommended a local lawyer for closing and we went there and signed the paperwork. They have secured signature stuff for all the paperwork and EVRYTHING can be done either by mail (I don't even do that) or over the internet. Have never had a bad experience with them.
