Craigs list Ad... but This boat is NOT FOR SALE

A fellow CBRAT sent me a notice that there was a C-Dory listed on Craigs list, and It looked like my boat. He sent a link to the listing and sure enough, the picture is of My boat. Mine is the only one with "SleepyC" on the side, fenders up at the bow rail and an aft rack with an inflatable over the cockpit. Yup, the picture is of my boat and NO IT IS NOT FOR SALE

For those of you who cruise Craig’s list or Boat Trader, the following picture is of SleepyC an 05, 22 Cruiser and it is NOT FOR SALE.

Thank you to a fellow CBRAT, Who I would be happy to identify, but not without his permission, For having a sharp eye, a good memory and for stepping forward. As a good friend of mine has often said on this site, “God I love this place.”

I am not a Craig’s List user, so know nothing about how this works, but someone grabbed a picture of my boat from the C-BRAT site and is using it on Craigs list with a description of a totally different boat.

The description seems close to fitting an 03 C-Dory Cruiser that has been in the Bay Area, California for a while, and ma actually be for sale. Just don't be expecting to see SleepyC either in the Bay area or for sale anytime soon.

Thanks Jim.

I have received several PM's concerning the ad, the picture, and the posting.

As Marty says so often, "God I love this place." Me too, Marty. What a resource. Thanks to each and every one.

Here is the rest of the story from what I know:

The described boat did not fit the picture, the current owner says that his previous owner did not have it long enough to get any pix, and the owner before that had not really had much or any and there was some computer user issues (which I also have to deal with) so I understand. At any rate, the Craigs List posting was for a legit sale, and no we know "greeneyegi" was the benefactor of the sale.

Here is the post from another thread regarding this:

He didn't have it long enough to get pictures, I'm guessing.probably didn't mean any harm, real nice guy.not to computer savvy, was used as example?

Greeneyegi,

Congratulations on your "New to You" C-Dory. Welcome here, and by all means stick around, learn and share. We all do. This has got to be the best group of folks you could run into.

Thanks for the insight and history on your previous owner. I spent a good share of the day yesterday, first checking to see that my boat was in fact, in the garage, and then trying to determine what level of shock, scare, damage, fraud or miss communication was going on. I'm glad it turned out to be what we conjectured it to be. When I say we, there were several entities involved. From the initial PM to me from a sharp-eyed, good memoried, well meaning and diligent fellow CBRAT, to several friends with varying expertise in several areas, the CBRAT admin folks who not only stepped up to the plate, but hit a grand slam, the local PD, my bank, and finally the new owner who has confirmed what I was really hoping -- that is that that no harm was really intended, and that folks here are really great, all around.

Thanks to all, I really love this place,

Harvey

From another thread:

Glad to see that this worked out. When I had my 2005 22 for sale a scammer relisted it for half the price in another state and someone did loss money when they sent a deposit to hold the boat.

That is one of the first questions asked me by the PD, "has there been any money exchange that I am aware of?"

I'm glad it worked out well too.

I too saw my boat for sale after I bought it about a month ago. Craigslist and several other sites. :amgry Scammers are active out there for sure!

Harvey, it's a fraud. I had a guy in So Cal a few yrs ago who used a pic of my black VW in a CL ad "for sale". Come to find out it was not his first fraud ad and he ripped off a few people who were none too happy. He eventually got convicted but that was the last I heard.

When the ad came up, I called him and asked him a bunch of inane questions etc. I finally told him it's impossible for him to be selling that particular car as I was looking at it in my garage. The little punk hung up.

Contact CL and they will remove the ad.

This issue is appearing to be a case of:

1. Lack of experience in computer function.
2. Lack of marine vessel sales experience.
3. Lack of user knowledge of the CBRATS site.
all on the selling owners part.

I am working with the buyer of the 03 22 Cruiser with twin 50 Yamaha OBs to clarify and verify and will continue to update and, I feel confident, that will be forthcoming.

I do want to again, express thanks to those of you who, and especially Brian, for the quick response to a possible serious issue.

The Rest of the Story.

The boat that was sold was in CA, sold by a fellow (Stan) who bought it (from Art - delta towed) without doing a sea trial. He put it into the water, and did one trip. about 7 minutes and then one engine heated up, so he docked it and subsequently posted it for sale. He probably had someone else doing that for him, and whoever that was went to the CBRAT site where he bought the boat from, and used the picture that was in the thread, which was the picture of SleepyC, my boat, in my posting there. the person who put together the add for Craigs List and for Boat Trader, had net even seen the boat they were making the ad for, so were not aware of the differences.

Then "greeneyegi" saw that ad, bought the C-Dory from Stan, and proudly posted here on C-Brats that he just got a really good deal on an 03 22 Cruiser, with twin 50's. Robert did get a good deal and should be proud of his accomplishment there.

He has been very forthcoming in providing information and pictures to substantiate his legitimate ownership of the "new to him" 22. I have been working on this for several days, and have had plenty of very good help in clearing my concerns and in verifying that in this case there was no scam or fraud involved, although it was a bit scary at first.

I have to credit sharp eyes and good memory from folks here on the site. The first was a PM from CDory 23 and then there were several others who popped up PM's and posts. This is a really great site and I really appreciated all the assistance from folks here, and from Bill and Mike in clearing this up.

Welcome "greeneyegi" and enjoy your boat, and hopefully we will get to meet somewhere down the way.
