A question I posed to a C Dory customer of ours just yesterday...
Why doesn't anyone ever post pictures of crabs, lobsters, or shellfish?

While I consider myself to be an avid (notice I didn't say accomplished) fisherman, I seldom eat what I catch. Indiana has mostly a "catch and release" fishery, and is not a hotbed for edible species...

On the other hand, I love to eat crab and shellfish! But alas here we have only crawdads and mussels... not exactly fine fare... :(

So why is it that we all post pictures of fine fish. The hour long battle, or the fish that fills the cockpit floor, or even the one that cannot be hauled aboard in one piece? But just try to find a picture of a tasty crab...

Is a crab so ridiculously ugly that if cannot be photographed? Or does it just not have the romance of a huge fish? Do I hafta Double-Dog-Dare someone to get a crab pic???

Little in life makes my mouth water like a steaming crab!
Food for thought? :D

Even more than that, I'd like to see some how to pics for rigging for crabs and shrimp out west and Alaska. How do you do it? This might sound like a ludicrous question to those born out there, but here, all you do is hang a light overboard and dip them as they swim past (estuaries or rivers). Crabs you can shine at night and do the same (net them on the bottom with a long-handled dip net).

Here's a twofer - both species are native to the Deception Pass, WA area.

Picture #31 of the "2003 Langley Gathering" features a bowl of Steaming Hot Mussels.

If I were a nerd, I could probably link it to this thread, but I ain't no nerd :crook ...maybe a nerd can do that for you.

OK...OK...
Adding TyBoo and Rigby to my list...
Whos got the ugliest crab pic?
Does the ugliest crab taste the best?
Or do really good crustys all come from Maine?

Next question... Who's house we meeting at for dinner? :D

Those are great pics all, and now I need a recipe. Whaddya all call a chowder with four kinds of crab in it?
Quattrocrab stew? Mmmmm My Fav!

Take a look at this website for crab rigging.

Flapbreaker: thanks for the link -- good info on a lot of west coast fishing.

I was in Oregon (Coos Bay) and a friend and I were eating shrimp when I asked where was a good place to dip them. No wonder I got the strange looks -- I guess they couldn't imagine what a 100+ foot net handle looks like.

Down here things are easy compared to all those methods for catching fish, crabs, and shrimp. People do use traps for the bluecrab, but if you have a boat and get proficient spotting them at night with a light (recreational), there's no going back to traps since you can simply motor along and pick your size. Can't argue that the crabs out there are much bigger and to me King Crab is certainly the king of crabs in taste, but we have Fl lobsters for that (and can get them by light-spotting too).

Wow! I wanna thank you all I have really learned a lot about crabbing!

Now I should spend a week out there crabbing and learning to ropes first hand... I could trade week showing someone how to grow corn...

Who's up first? Single file please...
