Cooler rack mod

Ive been looking to do the same mods on the Duck .The decking is that plastic wood from Lowes or Home depot ? I guess you could do the same with starboard ? What size alum bar did you use thanks JIM on Duck

Dan..... You are Da' Man! That looks great! I really like the little brackets you made with your saw and router. They look real nice with the rounded edges rather than being square. I am proud of you.

Just a quick comment/observation here....

That looks like the 150 gallon Igloo cooler (or bigger). The two latches that hold the cooler lid down are, at least on the cooler that I have had experience with, designed to be "quick release". You can lift the lid up, the latches will catch a little, you let the lid down a little bit, then pull up again and the lid will open. You don't have to actually unlatch the lid.

You may want to confirm that your latches are "quick release" because the wind will catch the lid and rip it off. If they are the "quick release" type, then you may have to put a latch that, I think, is called a "Jeep Latch". This will not let the lid fly off the cooler on the highway.

Anyway, I speak from experience on this one :D

If you are not tripping on it then what do you sit on? And how do you get old, or fat, or old fat people in and out? Just thinking out loud.

Your cooler rack looks good. I thought of doing something similar but felt like maybe the cooler would get in the way there too. I decided on the Canyon fish bag. If I don't catch anything it's not in the way at all. I put snaps on the handles so it snaps to the transom. So far it works great. The bag was $100 online.

This is the 20" x 60" bag. It will actually hold quite a few fish.

I am going to make mine out of alder as I didn't want to buy 20' of 1" decking. But I have been to Lowes' and HD and neither has the tubing. Anyone have any ideas where it would be easily obtainable? That has to cut the noise down some, especially at speed.

Dan-

Does it bother you in terms of not being able to see the motor's steering alignment when backing up?

(Maybe you aren't around tight docks and marinas enough to care!)

One negative is that the cooler blocks line of sight to the cooling water telltale. I didn't realize how frequently I glance back at that rascal until now that I can't see it.

When boating near Camp Pendleton, I often wonder how (or if) the Marines modified the outboards on their inflatables so the telltale is directed almost vertical. It also exits with a lot of force - their telltales easily reach 5-6 ft. straight up. Something similar would easily be seen over your cooler on that nice rack.

Joe, a replacement wheel with a steering knob works wonders. It's so easy and quick to go lock to lock that way and you do get a bit of an indicator by the knob location .

Don-

Been hot and cold on the spinner knob! Good with girls in high school, yes and no on the C-Dory!

I added a knob top my replacement wheel at one point, but didn't like the extra bump on the wheel where the knob collar wraps around the wheel or the knob itself, except in reverse, where it was a great tool! (In reverse, I stand bettween the fron seat in the aisle and steer with my left hand in order to see things more clearly.)

Been thinking of a way to add the knob slightly inside the outer wheel on one of the spokes and make it turn down inward out of the way when not in use (?)

Good idea about the tell-tale! Plenty of pressure there to add an extension tube up into visible range. Could even add a electrical pressure-sensitive switch and a red monitor light on the dash as a back-up or alternative.

DOD,
With my Johnsons which are Suzukis under a Johnson cover you can turn the telltales 360 degrees. Are you able to do that with your telltale and shoot them upwards so you can see it?
