Columbia Bar insanity

I would prefer to not be in that. Honestly, it reminds me of parts of Cook Inlet with the 30 foot tides. All one needs is some wind, a good storm, a good strong spring tide, and it gets really stupid with the shallow bottom to accentuate everything. Like the person filming, I prefer to watch it from shore.....

Agreed. The columbia can get like that if the wind and tide is right. I tried to enter a few years ago in my sailboat but missed the tide by about a half hour and got caught off clatsop spit. The breakers washed over my 30' boat and I had to turn around and go back out and sit it out behind the pilot boat that was waiting to pick up a pilot.

I got caught up in snot like that on a small minesweeper when we got hit by a hurricane in the Indian ocean. I was on the wheel and the only order I received from the captain was "keep us afloat". We were only supposed to do 30 mins each on the wheel because steering was so tough. The kid in front of me puked all over the wheel and collapsed on the deck. I grabbed the wheel with all this puke running down my hands and making the deck all slippy. I stayed on the wheel for nearly two hours as all the reliefs were too sick to take over. When I got off the wheel I smoked about 20 cigarettes one after the other. Then changed my undies.

Martin.
