We turned on the RV Coleman Polar Cub when we returned to Pensacola. Several days later I noticed that it was not running. We had a lightning storm the night before--and perhaps 30 seconds of low voltage (we have a standby generator which will come in if the voltage is dropped for more than a minute).
I tore into the unit, and found that the "hard start" capacity was burned. Some discussion with my friends who are more knowlegable in RV AC than I am suggested that I test the compressor. There was no short in the motor windings, or signs of a locked compressor.
I pulled the hard start unit, and our local RV supply had the replacement on the shelf. They suggested that this was a fairly common occurance with these units.
It started right up and has been running with normal current draw--and normal line voltage for 24 hours, so I have concluded it is fixed.
This is just a "heads up" for anyone who has this similar problem (startup amperage 25 amps--and the 20 amp breaker was blowing each time). It sure shows what the "hard start" capacity does....we are back to the 8 amp start up again.
