Most folks are using digital cameras and have a macro setting to make closeups of say coins, stamps, marine parts, serial numbers, stuff,..... My Sony works fair for close up but the lighting is uneven. How well does your camera work?

You may be having a problem with the camera casting a shadow, especially if you are using the on-camera flash for close-ups. Try using available light (outdoors, close to a window, etc). If using flash or lamps, set them up on either side of the object at 45º angles. This works best for two dimensional items, like stamps. For 3D objects (you want to see the date raised on a coin, detail in small parts, etc), pull back one light so there is a definite "direction" of light. Or, if using one light, you can set up a white card on the other side of the object to provide some fill light.
