Chesapeake suggestions

I know very little about the area and it never appealed to me because whenever I tried to SEE it, I found that roads leading to open vistas were hard to come across.

The last few weeks, however, I have been flying over it twice a week. From the air, I can see why people find it interesting. Looks like some great places to anchor.

I plan to tow my CD 22 up to NYC in the next month (I live in NC now but am working in NYC for the next few years - I commute home on most weekends). It takes around 9 hours driving without a trailer, maybe ten with one. Since that kind of day pretty much kills a weekend anyway, I thought it might be more fun to start out early Saturday morning and then launch somewhere midday for some exploring. I could anchor out overnight and resume my trip midday Sunday. That plan would break up the driving nicely and give me the opportunity to have some fun on the water.

Where would you Chessies suggest I launch and explore? The closer to I-95 the better since that is where I will be to start with. The boat makes 12 knots very easily and 24 when I want them so you can figure that into distances.

I would like to anchor out in a nice quiet area and I don't need any "town time" as I will be on my own and not looking for restaurants or other shoreside amusements.

First, I recommend that you go to this website:

That will give you listing of the launch sites on the Cheasapeake.

Check Anne Arundel County for launches in that area.

Take Highway 50 off off 95/495 to Annapolis.

I would recommend using Truxton Heights Park
Annapolis, MD - Spa Creek for a launch to visit the area around Annapolis (Severn river, Whitehall Creek, etc. - lots of places to gunkhole and play.

Sandy Point State Park is also good. Launch directly into the Bay below the bay bridge.

If you wanted to start a little further south the Rapphannock & Corrotomon Rivers offer some interesting & scenic places. Plus for the most part protected waters for the just incase. Unless you can be sure of a calm day I would stay off the Bay. Others may argue. But I'm old and don't need to take chances. Especially being so much to see on inland waters. In these areas you would be close to towns of White Stone & Kilmarnock. Nice laid back little towns that make you want to move there after a visit and have an affect on not wanting to return to work. They have all you need and to much of it. Also Marinas would be Tides Inn & Yankee Point. Last check Tides had 100% gas too, no ethanol. You can Google these places and get the particulrs.

Never been there, but how about the Marina and ramp at North East, MD?

Just 10 mins off I-95 and no traffic. You could make a short run to the Susquehanna and / or just find a quiet sheltered spot to anchor. From there it's only 2 more hours to NYC.

I would think about starting out in Georgetown on the Saasafras river at Duffy's Marina. you can store your tow rig there,nice people. the Granery is a local restaurant within walking distance if you don't want to eat on your boat. it's about eight miles out to bay. Head south staying close to the eastern shore. You can stop at Fairlee creek,or the Wye Rive which is beutifull for anchoring out. Worton Creek is nice if you wanted to drop a lunch hook. I would then head for Rock Hall. we like Rock Hall Landing Marina there is a West Marine that the marina folks wll usually take you to if you need anything. from Rock Hall you can head either directly west to Baltimore where we would recommend the Henderson's Wharf Marina walking distance to Fells Point and Little Italy.
Or you could leave Rock Hall and head for Knapps Narrows and by way of Broad creek, Edge Creek and the San Domingo creek have a beautiful cruise into the back side of St. Michaels. Anchor up and dinghy in to the dinghy dock on the back side. From there you can easily head to Oxford then across to Annapolis, then back to Baltimore and then angle back to the Sassafras to Georgetown nice week long trip. Check our album same trip with some pic's from 2011. 2000 miles of coastline in the Chesapeake bay. lots of rivers and creeks to explore mostly sand and mud bottom. lot's of spots to hide it it get rough.

Havre de grace would be a good place to stop . They have a nice city marina for launching. http://havredegracemd.com/ is their website. Just look for the city marina tab. From there you are at the head of the Chesapeake where the susquehanna river comes into the bay.You can go north to Port Deposit where you will cross under I-95. Go south to the Elk River and the C&D canal or take a trip up the sasafras river to Georgetown. Its about a 2 hr run to the inner harbor in Baltimore. If you do stop here let me know. If you get off I95 onto 495 on east side of DC it will take you to US 50 east to Annapolis. You can cross the bridge to Kent Island and launch at one of the marinas there, Easy run north to Chestertown and Rock Hall. Back onto 50 east to 301 north and it will take you to I95 near Wilmington DE.

We have launched from Sandy Point State Park many times. Just east of Annapolis before the bridge. Don't miss the turnoff or you'll have to go over the bridge and back. It is marked.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I may bring the boat up in two weeks and will definitely stop over to get a brief feel for the Chesapeake
