Chatterbox Falls In June.

Hi Folk's
We have a couple dates set a side to make a trip to Chatterbox Falls this year. The first dates are the sixth through the twentieth of june or we also could go Sept. fourth through the eighteenth. I would sure love to here from folk's that has made the trip in June. I am wondering if may be June is to early. I have heard that from the fourth of July to Labor day is very busy time there. We are also planning on spending a week or so on the way back in the San Juans. thank you in advance for your information.

Its all weather related but either time can be good. Well anytime is good at the falls. its the weather on the way there. There is a group of boats that spent new years eve at the falls every year. I would choose June over september most times but with the weather this year there may not be a differance?

June would be a good time as would Sept. Sept might be a little less crowded as school has started by then. There is a three day max stay at the dock. I have been there several times and it is a gorgeous spot.

I was there in late June last year and wished I had gone earlier. The number of falls running earlier in the spring and the snow pack on the mountains should make a early June trip spectacular. I'll be heading up North May 24th or so after I prep my boat in Anacortes.

Everybody should probably go once. In a fast boat like the C-Dory it's a day trip from Mary Island. Stop at Hotham Sound for a view of Friel Falls.
I don't go fast anymore...too much to enjoy on the way.

If you like a challenging hike take your boots and gloves and hike up to to trappers cabin...be forwarned it's not a hike for novices. The trail is usually marked by ribbons because the "professional adventure leaders" at McDonald island need to find it. Turn back if in doubt.

If you have room for some firewood there's a nice sheltered pit.

Don't be shy...run your boat up in front of the falls and throw a stern anchor for a great view. The current will keep you hooked up and the sound will make you sleep like a baby.

Hmmm, I'd wonder a bit about that. First, If I remember right, the current is running from the falls, out to the "inlet". Probably be OK to use a stern anchor, but then you would be facing away from the falls, unless you are sitting in the cockpit, facing aft. Could happen I guess.

Here's a link to our album form Labor Day 08. Lots of rain then. More than the ranger had seen in 8 years there.

I would take may over september. More weather risk in september. We went last year in september and it poured for 17 of the 18 days. Without the furnace we now have, it was miserable.

Hi Folk's
I want to thank you all for your information. June it is..!! I'M going to start today and get a weather report everyday for the next two weeks to get an Idea what the weather trend is. that will give us an Idea of what we are going to be facing weather wise. Our weather has definitively changed the last four years or so, colder wetter springs and much shorter summers. I have alway figured that on the coast in June you can expect less rain, less fog, and more wind. In Sept. you can expect more rain, more fog, less wind. I would much rather deal with the wind and pick the times when we travel. I have fished out of the Umpqua River much of my life and their is going to be a short season in SEPT. first thru the tenth when you will be allowed to keep wild silver Salmon. If we take our time in june and go to Chatter box Falls we will be able to take our time we have in SEPT. and hang out on the ORE. Coast and do some fishing and Crabbing. I hope everyone is having a great day.

don't know which route you will take to get there but when you are working on weather take a look at tides and winds. if you have a tides against the wind you can have a really rough rides. If on the other hand you decide to wait for the tide to change until its traveling with the wind you will have a much better ride with less waves. Much of the trip is up the REACHES. long narrow canyons with not place to duck out of the wind. Just something to keep in mind.
