Charter or Rental

The wife needs to taste this C-dory thing before we go any further. Is there anyone/anyplace that charters or rents C-dory boats? Not too worried about where so much, obviously this time of year things will be a bit slow up north. We live in SoCal but a trip somewhere new is OK. I have owned sailboats for many years but the wife has had three hip replacements on the right side and being crew on a sailboat is not going to happen for us. Thanks for your replies.

There is a well equipped 22 you can charter through AYC in Anacortes, WA. AYC.COM will show you the boat.
Usally there is someone close than will volunteer to take you out..

Bob and Kyung,

I have seen the AYC charter boat on a couple of occasions, and both times the folks on board were very happy with the boat and arrangements.

There are some C-Brats who have offered demo rides to folks that are still in the "looking phase" of C-Dorydom, and are happy to do so, but there aren't many that rent out their boats. Might also check with Mark at Wefings, Advertises here, top right corner frequently. I know they used to charter a C-Dory but not sure about presently.

As to being converted sailers, you will be in fine company here. Many of the "Brats" have been sailers, some for many years, a lifetime and some still are. I just sold my last sailboat this spring after owning both it and my 22 Cruiser concurrently for almost 5 years.

There just comes a time when a C-Dory makes real good sense.

Thanks for the quick replies. I left a message about the Southern opportunity - it can be cold this time of year (I lived in Sarasota for a season or two) but it is 40 or less in the PNW right now!

If you can come up for the boat show i could take you for a ride in my 22, which is for sale, and take a look at several others in the area.

I spent three years in 29 palms, not much boating around your area.

We used to rent A CD 25 classic but had little interest compared to our day rentals, so we found her a good home .With the current economic climate it would probably be more active , but still probably not cost effective for us .

Bob and Kyung,

If you are looking to go out for a day sometime, my boat is in the water not far from SFO, and I welcome guests.
Just send me an if you are interested.

David

You may want to decide which of the C Dories you are interested in:
The 22, the 25 or the Tom Cat. They are all a bit different. For S. Calif. (where I spent most of my life) the C Dory 25 mono hull is a good boat (I owned both a 22 and a 25 which I kept on the West Coast in the last few years.) The 22 which I sold is owned by a person who lives fairly close to you--not sure if it is in the water now or not.

The 25 just has more room, and is a bit easier to get around in--especially the bunk, with the hip issues. The 25 also has an inclosed head, vs a porti potty under the v berth on the 22.

Hopefully someone will offer you a ride in their boat. I would offer you a ride and use in Pensacola, if you want to come down here to look at a Tom Cat 255. Faster and a better ride in chop than the monohulls, but a bit more expensive to both buy and run. Although the cruise fuel use is only a fraction more than a monohull 25.

Thanks Tom, David and Bob for the offers of a ride. It is the C-Brats that have us interested in a C-dory. I ride horses with folks that are just like the C-Brats and it makes that activity something to really look forward to, just more fun to have fun with friends. I has been below freezing at night here in the high desert and lots of wind. Rode with friends down in the low desert near Indio today and it was in the mid to high 60's - very nice.

Before buying our C-Dory, I was interested in a charter too, and was willing to fly/drive somewhere to do it. No luck.
But has swapping boats among C-Brats for a week every been discussed on the forum? (I have seen posts about rentals and all owners said no)
Boats are personal things, but I wonder if a swap has been done or could be done?
I suppose if someone wanted to use my 22 Cruiser for a week on the Erie Canal, Trent-Severn, Thousand Islands, Lake Champlain, or somewhere similar in my neck of the woods, in exchange for a week on their boat somewhere interesting, I might entertain it.
No clue how insurance and things would work, but seems people are doing this sort of thing with houses/condos/apartments these days.
Not to change the thread subject, but has anyone done it or thought about it?

I have thought about a boat exchange also. I'd like to do all or part of the Inside Passage but would be open for most anywhere. My territory for trade could be my home waters of the Indian River Lagoon in East Central Florida. I also visit Abaco in The Bahamas every year and can have my boat there for trade or you could take it there yourself. This could be interesting. I have done this with my SeaPearl sailboat.
