Yep...I'm still here and yes like Bris's son I shook his hand on Tuesday. When we were shaking hands I presented him with our fire department's challenge coin. After he handed it to his aide for safe keeping, he turned around to me again and slipped his Presidential coin in my hand. Not long after, numerous fire department coins came out of pockets and he exchanged them for Presidential coins.
He was truly a warm and compassionate man. He was very sincere in his words of appreciation for our participation in the rescue/recovery efforts over the past month.
There were many fantastic individuals from across our country that were involved in this massive effort, not only with "boots on the ground" but with an outpouring of financial assistance for those survivors of the destruction of their homes. The local folks of Oso, Darrington and Arlington prepared fine home cooked meals in the early days. (Homemade biscuits and gravy for breakfast, BBQd chicken and ribs for supper, homemade pies, casseroles. pasta dishes etc.).
For some of us that were commuting daily from Arlington to work on the Darrington side of the slide, some residents of Darrington opened their homes so we could spend the night there so we weren't having to drive the long way around each night.
It was truly neighbor helping neighbor.
(Bris, I sent you a pm).
