CD22 Speaker location suggestions

Quite a few of us have put them in the very back of the cabin up against the aft bulkhead and cabin top. Keeps them way out of the way of anything. As Roger says away from compass and future electronic gear. Mine are as tight to the roof and back wall as possible. They are Planar speakers from WM also the 5 inch box type George

I cut mine into the seat boxes. There is a picture of one in my "Interior" album. I had a pair mounted high and at the stern, but I did not like them right behind my head when sitting in the rear, port seat. I like the sound better where they are now.

Thanks for the suggestions. I had thought of the seat boxes, but my port box is a moveable one... not sure if that would work. As a Darwin fan, several of my early boats were "Beagles"... I am going to think a bit more and decide whether to mount the included speakers into seats or even into the v-berth, or whether to get some box speakers and surface mount them...

My port one is movable also. I just have a little extra wire in that box and it seems to work. My biggest concern is damaging the speaker as I take things in and out of the box.

Yes, I copied C-Batical, and did it myself. I bought and used a roto tool to cut the openings. Used the same tool to widen the v-birth opening.

Here's what I did, but I'm not sure if your speakers are box or if they need to be mounted in a box.

These are out of the way enough that when sitting behind the wheel, they don't block visibility at all. I thought about the back corners of the cabin, but they were too easy to hit our heads on and would also be blasting the person in the aft dinette seat.

Also, they're shielded, so they have very little effect on the compass. Another pair we tried (Polk) were "shielded" as well, but would affect the compass from several feet away.

Thanks for the response. What kind of speakers are those? Sounds like the brand is important for shielding (though the only compass I have on board is a hand held one)

I am also curious how you attached them to the ceiling.

Those are PolyPlanar MA7500. They come with a metal bracket that allows for tilt adjustment. The part of the roof I attached them to has a small amount of core, enough that I could drill about 1/2" deep pilot holes for the screws I used (I think they were stainless #8 1/2" pan heads). Different years had different core configurations in the roof. Fortunately, mine already has a roof penetration at the radar arch mounts, and I could visually check for core there before drilling.

Your boat may not have core here, and in that case you'd want to do something else!

I recently bought a west marine USB audio system that came with a pair of speakers (http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=998798&#.UPonPCfC18E)
The speakers are 6.5 inch ones and loook lke they need to be mounted to a bulkhead. I wonder if anyone has had any experience installing similar speakers in a CD22. I have seen a fe set ups described using box speakers...

How much your USB audio system costs you? I am planning to get new audio system so can you guide me?

I have mounted several box speakers on the outboard pillars of the windshield up high. I epoxy a 1x2 to the fiberglass, paint it and then screw the speaker bracket into that block of wood.

Still waiting for reply..

Sorry, I was away on holiday in Florida enjoying warmer waters!
I don't remember exactly but I seem to remember that I got it on sale for around $75 CDN. However I am not sure as I am still away from home.

I thought I had replied to this. I don't remember how much the system cost me, but it was on sale and was under $100 as far as I can remember.
