CD 25 weight?

I know this has variables, but what does a 25 weigh with motor and aluminum trailer? Anyone have a ballpark figure?

Mine weighs 7450 lbs with galvanized trailer, twin 80 Yami's, full gas, 1/2 water, all equipment ready to go including raft and ice chest. Aluminum trailers are about 500-700 lbs lighter from what I've read, depending on the mfr.

It has been a couple of years, but the Clara Mae weighed in right at 7,000 pounds on her aluminum trailer fully loaded with fuel, water, and supplies. She has a single Honda 130 four stroke. I may have scraped off a few pounds on an oyster bed or two since then. :smiled
 
The wt.is supposed to be 3500lb dry.then a alum. trl is about 900lb -1200lb.then a 150hp yamaha about 475lb.I was wondering what the tow wt. would be without fuel and water and without a holding tank and any non -esential items .I'm trying to figure my next tow vehicle .I have the 22-dory now thinking of upgrading to a 25.I'm pulling the 22ft with a 96Mazda MPV with a 4500lb tow rating it tows the 22 easily
 
I have probably towed the Clara Mae 10,000 miles or more. If you plan to do any long distance hauling, I would not cut the rating too close.

I used a Jeep Grand Cherokee with a V8 to tow the Clara Mae for the first year. It got the job done power wise but really did not have enough rear end. Then I bought a Dodge 2500 with a diesel and it was like night and day. Mainly because of the heavier truck. The Jeep weighed about 3,500 pounds and the Dodge is over 6,000. Much more control and much less stress. Especially when those semi's pass you on the interstate.
 
My 2005 Dodge Diesel dually weight 7300 lb without my 4000 lb slide in camper I still feel my 22' C-Dory in the back every time I come up my 9 % grade hill, where I live. After reading some of the threads about tow vehicle I just shake my head!... No you don't need a 3500 cummin to pull a 22' C-Dory , but with my slide in camper the C-Dory my 2 dogs wifey and all the soft drink , I am thinking about trading my truck for the new 4500 dodge truck that is coming soon . Anybody can pull massive weight behind a vehicle but stopping when there is an emergency is a different thing , just listen to the the news!

That's true Gary, stopping is vital. I don't carry a camper on my truck and the surge brakes on my aluminum trailer do a really good job. Regardless, it is easier to stop a 7,000 pound load behind you with a 6,000 plus pound truck than a 3,500 pound one. And I havn't really checked, but I am sure the wheel base on my dodge is longer than that of the jeep I had which likely helps on the control side.
 
I recently purchased a 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 Turbo Diesel for our CD-25 We just got back from Florida and put over 4000 miles on it in the past 6 weeks. Towing was a DREAM!!!
Even when the Semi's pass it didn't move. I had a tire blow out on the dual axil trailer and didn't even know it, a trucker called me on the radio and told me. I found myself doing 75-80 mph you don't know your pulling anything. 1900rpm and I'm doing 80mph..what torque
The only negative I have about the vehicle is the stiff suspension on the rear.
I can't wait till our next trip, it really was a pleasure to drive and tow

I have one CD25 that's "fully loaded" with lots of equipment, extra batteries, dinghy motor, kicker motor, inverter, dinghy, and infinitum. With full fuel and water on a galvanized tandem axle trailer this rig is right at 8,000 pounds. On an aluminum trailer in this size I would expect to see about 7,500 pounds but I'd say most CD25's are going to fall into the 7,000 pound range on an aluminum trailer (7,500 on steel).

Get the longest tow vehicle you can stand to drive. From a pure "comfort" (as in you're not totally stressed out) standpoint nothing else you can do to a tow rig makes things work better (comfort-wise) than wheelbase on the tow vehicle. Wheelbase coupled with weight coupled with power makes towing the most pleasant. The bigger the dog is compared to the tail the more things stay under control.

I should also add that towing the CD25 versus the CD22 is more than just the difference in weight. The CD25 is much larger (taller, wider, longer) and is much more affected by semi rigs passing by and winds (especially a good side wind). The longer trailer with the heavier boat can really exert some side loads on the tow rig which a short wheelbase tow vehicle won't handle nearly as well. I often pull the CD25's with my GMC Yukon (not the long version); it's not a fun thing and if I had to do it more than just occassionaly or for longer differences I wouln't use the Yukon at all. There's just not enough control.
 
Thank you for the responses. I was hoping my 2005 Jeep Grand would tow a 25. But it appears it may not because it is rated at 6500# tow with tow package and - more important - short wheelbase. I've towed enough to know that getting going is not the most important part.
SO, what do you 25" owners tow your boats with?

I tow with a 2003 Expedition 4x4, 5.4L, 3.73 rear end, 8,700 lb tow rating (non-4x4 is 8,900 lbs). Does fine, gets about 10 mpg towing, 18+ non-towing (if not too many hills or headwinds that is).

I towed the CD25 with a Jeep GC for a few hundred miles. No troubles, but then there were no tricky situations, either. With the trailer hooked up, the Jeep wheels weighed 4700 and the trailer wheels weighed 7400 if I remember correctly. It would have made me feel less nervous if the weights were the other way around.

I now have a Dodge 1-ton, Cummins HO, 4WD, auto, 4:10 gears, single rear wheels, and 13k tow package. It has the big cab and long bed. No problems. Gets 18mpg empty and 12.5mpg the last time I towed the boat for any distance. I have never weighed my CD25 loaded without the tongue hanging on the hitch, but with the steel trailer, all the extra cabin weight as compared to the newer CD25, and all the junk we seem to need, I would be surprised if it was less than 8000 pounds. It still outweighs the tow rig, but not by much.
 
We've pulled our 22' C-Dory from Seattle to New Orleans and back with our 2002 Dodge Dually six speed manual tranny. We were on the overload springs coming back to Seattle because the truck was loaded with household gear.

The truck has the power and the gears, but I also appreciate the stability given by the dual wheels, on high speed curves, high winds, and while passing big trucks. Those dual wheels become outriggers.

It is some what of a bear to drive around in the city though. It won't fit into parking spaces at the mall :lol:

I always estimated that Shearwater weighed in around 7500 pounds with a full load of gas and water on the trailer. Shearwater is pretty light for a 25 with a 388 pound motor, no shower, hot water heater, microwave, pressurized water or other fluff that the newer models seem to be loaded up with. I no doubt make up the weight difference with tools, spare parts and fishing equipment though.
Original tow rig was a diesel powered 2 door Tahoe pretty close in weight to Mike's jeep. Put about 2000 miles on with the boat behind and never had a problem or felt real unconfortable but you knew the boat was behind you.
The new tow rig is a 2002 Chevy 2500HD Duramax diesel extended cab short bed with a 12000 pound tow rating (VS 6500lb for the Tahoe). It's also about 4 feet longer than the Tahoe was. 13 mpg when towing and you barley notice the boat. So much more relaxing to drag the boat around compared to the Tahoe.

I tow with exactly the same vehicle as Steve/Dora-Jean. Mine has the air suspension on it and that has helped a lot. It is my work vehicle and it works fine for towing the 25. If you read the fine print, the 8,700 lb tow rating is only if you have an equalizing hitch.

When I bought this boat from Les, we put on an equalizing hitch. I've towed short distances without the hitch bars attached, and I would never want to tow long distances without it. I'm a real proponent of the hitch for the combination that I've got. I've never had the problems of sway, wind, semis, etc that others have mentioned here. It tracks straight and true at all times.

I weighed my boat with everything on it, 3/4 tank of fuel and some water. The boat is about 7,500 lbs.

I don't think you need a long box diesel dually to tow this boat, but I wouldn't want any smaller vehicle than I have for this job. As others have said, it isn't getting it to move that is the issue, it's getting it to stop in an emergency.
