Catman's Poisoned Waters Post in "Thats Life"

Greetings all,

On April 20th the good Catman posted a thread in "Thats Life" about a PBS show on our countries poisoned waters. Thank you very much, Catman

I think this is something EVERYONE should be aware of and so am moving the topic to General Chat. I sure hope Catman doesn't mind.

What follows was my reply to his post.

I saw the show last nite. It aired on PBS Channel 8 here in Duluth.

IT WAS AN EYE OPENER FOR SURE.

I've known about a dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico off the Mississippi River mouth for a few years now. It is fairly small and is avoided. If If I got it right, they said over 40% of Chesapeake Bay is now dead. Most of the fisheries are gone an no oystering is done there anymore. Just the oysters alone is a shocker, the bay has provided us most of the non Gulf coast oysters since the white man came here. Now they are gone????

I had not heard about the Puget sound dead zone either. Also, PCB's are being found at super high levels in orcas now as well. I thought the PCB thing had improved some years ago.

Un F ing real, How come the whole country has been kept in the dark about all this?

I guess it's time for us to get off our asses and shake up the Gubmint til we get some meaningful action. If we don't, it looks as though our marine resources will all go down the tubes.

Really? I have read about the chesapeake being in trouble since I lived there in the mid 70's. Its cleaner now then it was then. still has its problems.

as for the dead zone here, are you talking about the hood canal? Did you know that one of the main causes of oxygen depletion in the canal was the yearly dumping of million of chum salmon carcass after the eggs where stripped and sold to japan by the tribes? They could not sell the meat so they just dump the fish in the canal and they rotted taking all the oxygen with them. Did the show cover that? The tribes are supposed to be making the chum into dog food or fertilizer now but I don't know if they started that yet or not.

Glad your informed about this long debate problem, welcome aboard. Now join a fishing club in your area that is working to help solve some of these problems and stop fertilizing your yard.
 
Capt Dan - I certainly appreciate your sentiment, but we like to have topics that are prone to attract political comment or stoke controversy in the That's Life forum precisely for the reason you sought to move it out. All of our members are thoughtful and restrained and will post only contributive remarks. The members are also the only ones who can read the That's Life threads. Having something like this open to non-members invites those with an extremist's need to rant to sign on for just that reason. We prefer folks to join our group because they like us and our boats.

I'm posting this from work on my BlackBerry and won't attempt to move the thread with my phone. However, you can expect Bill to move it back under cover when he sees it. It's nothing personal, nor does it reflect an opinion on the subject one way or another.

I certainly like you all and I certainly love the boats and am in no way a "treehugger". Those that know me well might even refer to me on occaison as someone with a "neck of color".

I seriously did not realize the current extent of degradation portrayed on the program. I hope it's not as bad as they made it seem.

I thank you for your courteous handling of a mistake on my part.

Captain Dan, no apology necessary. I thank you for considering my feelings, and your interest in our marine environment. Too, Tyboo Mike is a highly proficient Pub manager, and knows much about appropriate postings.

We're darn fortunate to have him and Bill Da Nag as site zookeepers.
