Catch 22

I just looked at the Restoration/Projects in the Catch 22 album, and once again I'm duely impressed by the energy and expertise that some of you folks exhibit - way to go Kevin !

thanks! I'm getting close to the point where i can just use the boat and have fun, and do projects when i want to, for this summer its fuel tanks, and a few odds and ends, then over the winter i will build new interior and replace the back wall of the cabin, and paint the boat, can't wait to be on the water, thanks again.

Hello Kevin,

Yes, very nice work. Catch 22 looks very nice and those new gas tanks should be great. Thanks for posting the pics.

Kevin,

I'm working on a refit/rebuild of my '84 Classic and am interested in the tanks you are installing. Who makes them and where are they available? Will you pull from both tanks simultaneously to keep them fairly level or do you have another approach?

Thanks,

Tom

Hey Tom, i built the tanks myself, i couldn't find any that quite fit the space how i wanted them to and i like making stuff, i designed them on the computer so i have all the files to cut another set of them, if you were closer to me i could do it for you but shipping them would be pretty pricey, i could send you all the files and angles for the bends and you could have a local shop make them for you, if you are interested. I was going to have them feed together, but a friend of mine one got bad gas in one tank and it fouled both, so im keeping them seperate just so that if something happened to one, it would not effect the other (leaks or contamination), i have valve set up to switch between and a gauge that will toggle between... let me know if there is anything i can do to help...

Kevin, Nice job, especially the tanks. There could be a market out there. Good to see you back on the site again.

the tanks have been a massive chore to figure out, but in the end i think i will be happy with them, does anyone have any rough idea what kind of fuel economy an older 22 angler gets with a late 90's 2 stroke 90 horse or any similar setup, im wondering what my new range will be, or is there a post on this somewhere...

Catch 22: I have a 1987 Johnson 90 hp Vro. , figure 2.5 miles per gal. for all around use. Great engine no problems. I built a insulated baffle in front of the motor to cut noise. I use mine for fishing only and have a Nisson 9.8 troling motor.

Your's is a newer engine and may due better. My fishing is running 5 to 10 miles off -shore of Lake Superior with two or three persons, then using the 9.8 two stroke (2002) to trol for about 8 hours using about 1.2 gal. all day, Great little engine.

For my use I can not justify spending big bucks for a new engine. C-Otter

thanks for the input c-otter, hope i get a little better than that but dont expect too much, one day i will upgrade motors, but i have other priorities for now...

Catch 22
Congrats on the tanks, they look really good. In my 1981 I am currently using 22 litre gas cans but would like to go to built in. Apparently the early boats had a built in tank under the motor well but I use that area for my trim tab pump and fuel filter and for misc storage.
I know a couple of good aluminum welders, would it be possible to have a look at your drawings?
Tnx, Jimbo

Hey Jimbo, I can send you a copy of the drawings but they are on my computer at work, i was not planning on being there again until thursday but maybe if i have time tomorrow i can. The tanks do not fit the side of the boat so closely that they have to be located exactly where i put them, so if you made a cardboard mock up of one you could move it around until you saw where you liked it best, then figure out your mounting. The tanks are pretty deep so i had to have custom senders made and had to add length to the pick ups, but i have measurements for everything.

Catch 22
I just noticed you are in Seattle.
That's an easy afternoon drive down and back for us.
As long as I have some sort of bill to show at the border I won't have a problem bringing them back.
Are you interested in building another set of tanks?
The fact that they can move around a bit is good as I would probably move them forward to get some weight off the stern.
Let me know about building another set.
Tnx, Jimbo

yeah, i could make another set of tanks, having just finished installing mine a half hour ago (pics coming soon), i look forward to using the boat soon, one more day of work on some other things tomorrow and i should be on the water, if you are really interested i will price out all the materials and get you a price for a pair. What would be your time line for wanting them? I think i still have a mock up tank that i built out of thin gauge metal to test fit it in the boat, its identical to the final product, i could send you that and you could move it around and see where you want the tanks, and be working on brackets preparing the hull, so when you got the final tanks, you would be ready for them...

Catch 22
Sounds good.
Send me a PM with the costs for material and labour.
That would be great if I could get your mockup
I'm not in a panic, summers coming and we all want to enjoy our boats.
Jimbo

finished the tanks and got the boat on the water today, everything went perfectly, both tanks filled and fed really well and i was able to swich back and forth between the tanks without a hitch in the motor, tomorrow i will run the boat again and then change the fuel filter, to get rid of any fabrication dust that may have got in the tanks, sure felt good to be out on the boat, this was only the 3rd time ive used it, with just me on board in decent water i could do about 36mph.

Kevin-

Nice design, engineering, fabrication, and installation job!

36 mph in a "FLAT IRON" Classic, eh?

Musta been pretty close to squirrley, no?

Probably doesn't compare much with the"Millenium" blue missile, though!

How's your work on that re-design project going?

Probably a lot of folks here don't know about your design and building of that boat, and your family's sponsorship and involvement in the hydroplane racing game! (If not, take a look through Kevins's Catch 22 album.)

Joe. :teeth :thup

you know, i was really suprized, the boat did not feel unstable at all, granted i only went that fast for a short while and did not turn, i expect i will not often get away with that, nor do i care to, also i only had safety gear onboard and thats it, loaded with everything it will be heavier too...

the hydroplane is on hold this season, as my brother who drives is having a kid mid season, and my other brother who crews just had one, the hull is finished, so before next year it will be a matter of building two motors and then go for the championship...
