Catalina this week-end?

Hi Steve,
Well, we were not able to hook up. Bill was quite successful he shared with me later. Strange, we were both at the Isthmus too. But I anchored in the free area and he used the moorings. Plus we were both out "working" on the water most of the time I imagine.
I caught a few fish, whitefish and sculpin, but my buddy was sea-sick all the time, and though a trooper and not complaining, when we got out at night he couldn't handle the darkness/swells and I couldn't handle his "ralph-ing" over the side so we got no lobsters as I took pity on the poor soul.
And the season is nearly closed.
Bill graciously offered to help me out next week-end and I am waiting on the weather to see what happens.
Thanks for asking. I hope I will run into you this summer on the water.

My friend and I had a great time at Catalina. The weather was great and the bugs were crawling. With a multi-day permit we managed 27 bugs (I counted wrong and thought we had 28) for a total weight of 56 pounds. After not doing very well for most of the season it was a very welcomed change of luck. I'm not sure if it was the spot we were in or if the bugs were just crawling well. For now I'll chalk it up to luck.
I don't know how we missed Jeff. The only thing I can think of is that he was already gone by the time we got up. After a long night of hooping we needed a good nights rest.
Hopefully Jeff and I can head out this weekend. We'll have to watch the weather.

That's incredible, thanks for the info! Sure beats our 2, barely legal, one on a dive, one hooping for 3 years combined! Location, location, location. Oh well, maybe someday we'll find 'our spot'.
Sooooo, what does one do with 56 lbs of live lobster??? Wish I had that problem. Do you twist off the tails, de-vein then freeze?

It's a terrible problem to have 
. We did just what you said, clean, devein and then freeze. Of course we ate a couple fresh. I went back on wed. and thurs. with a different friend and we got another 28 legals. Now my freezer is really packed and I'm trying to get one more trip in before the season ends. I don't know what I'm going to do with myself after the season ends.

The limit is 7 per person per day. If you are going out for multiple days you can get a multi-day permit that lets you get up to 3 limits per person. Minimum size is 3.25", measured from the eyes to the back of the shell. Things change a little next year with lobster cards. Possible more changes coming after that. If you've never tried hooping it is a lot of fun.

Bill, good job, and near the end of the season. Must not be many traps around where you go, they usually vacuum them all up by mid-season.
Joel buddy, you can come out with me anytime (next season), I can give you LOTS OF PRACTICE!!!! Not many bugs though. Heck, I've nearly worn out my hoop nets, might have to replace some.
You're allowed 5 nets per person, 7 max per boat. That's a good limit, because 7 will keep you busy every minute tending them. You let them soak about 30 minutes each. But you have to manuever your boat (in the dark), gently get ahold of the floating/lighted jug or bouy, then pull quickly (first pull most important), then fast and steady the rest of the way. There's a fair amount of technique to doing it right with more success. I believe I have the technique, just can't find the buggers...

SNOW ??? It missed us here....I expedted rain today...but it is bright and warm...no wind...good day to paint on the ole Model A Ford...someday I will get that car done...
Lobster Yum ! I never have caught one...How deep do you put those rings? I would imagine you would need to pull em up plenty fast, or the bugs would escape.... how long on the bottom ?? cat food in cans?

But in regards to lobster Joel. Yes, I personally have the best luck with cat food, in cans, the moist stuff. I often begin by opening the tops about 1/4 to 1/2 way to make them last longer and eventually open them up all the way.
I have had my best luck at depths of 60 - 80 feet and sitting times of 20 minutes.
Yes, a fast, consistent, no-pause pull is critical. Even then, I have seen lobsters snap their tail right at the waters surface and escape....
It is good exercise.
