In 2013, boaters 49 and younger are required to obtain a boater education card. In 2014, all boaters born after December 31, 1954 are required to obtain their card.
 
So those of us born before 1959 are already way cool and sharp witted enough to not be causing grief on the water. I like that!

OR we spend so much time trying to get the rope into that little notch, ( once we've found it), on the fly wheel on the ol' Evinrude that we just aren't a hazard.

LOL, well said. I fall in this group.
 
Hmmm - maybe all born before 1940 should have a boater education card also. Some of us have forgotten more than those born after 1954 have learned. :-)
 
....or they hoped we'd be...gasp! ...dead...gasp! by the time our time frame for getting a Boater Education Card came around. :mrgreen: (Just for the record, I went ahead and obtained one even though it would never be required of me when they first became available).
 
Oregon has similar requirements for several years. I don't recall when I was supposed to get the card, but I got it early. When Tiffany was 14 she and I took a class at a local marine store together. It was kind of cool.
 
In New Jersey they now require every boat operator to successfully complete a boaters education course-been a while but I think it was about an eight hour course with a test-not sure if the waters are safer now on a July 4th weekend but violators cannot say they "did not know" -NJ issues a card now indicating successful completion of this course that is asked for if stopped by Coast Guard or Marine police. I guess mandatory training is not a bad thing for an activity that has inherit risks.

Even though I will never need the card, the wife will, she's 8 years younger than me so we will take the class together, this way when she says "that's not what we learned in class" I will at least have an answer for her.

No, we should be in charge of revoking them for dumb stuff we observe on the water, at the ramp and at the pier! :mrgreen: :roll:

We've never done anything dumb (at least in the last 10 minutes anyway!).

I have to get my card, again. (I'm an '82er). I had the certificate a few years back but never received the card, so I have to get it again. Luckily I knew the test and pamphlet like the back of my hand last time so I dont think it will take long. can get it online.
 
$10 one time fee. But if I had a crystal ball, I'd say it's just a matter of time before Olympia sees it as a "revenue source" and ups it along w/ making it a yearly thing.

yeah its a cheap price to make sure you know your stuff on the water...for now.
 
I have had mine since they first started. I'd be OK with an annual, IF it would help keep on the water safer, not just for a new revenue stream for the general fund.
