Can You Believe This?

I got a cheap little slide scanner for Christmas, and first out of chute was our Ramazan trip to Egypt in February 1970. Pat and Patty (on the right) on a Beirut street nearly 40 years ago...why are we wearing suits, you ask? Well, all Peace Corps volunteers in the Middle East did then.

And no comments about body mass...

Damn, I married a cutie, didn't I?

Does anyone else hear the theme music to Austin Powers when you see that photo?

Goodness, we were all so young back then.

Best wishes,
Jim

So, maybe we need to get a thread going for High School year books...

Pat & Patty: I think the same man met Sherryl and me when we were there.

Here is the link for all of our Eygpt pix on Picasaweb.

David - Austin of course looks nothing like me - NOT! Genes are funny things, no?

Yes, Patrick, that guy is just ageless, isn't he? He'll probably still be there 100 years from now!

Jim, a little older than high school - we were both 23 in these pictures. We were young, but the funny thing is, it just doesn't seem all that long ago (three kids and 40 years later, I still remember the sights, sounds and smells of the street in Cairo in front of the Thebes Restaurant like it was yesterday). I am not sure what emoticon goes with that thought...

Mark, I don't think I ever said "groovy" - not never ever!

of course we were young, I was 5 and Susan was 1.

Tom, you were obviously born at a very early age!!

Yeah, what kind of scanner, those colors and the clarity is excellent. I've got a bunch of slides I ought to do that with, to say nothing of the super8MM movies that I need to preserve somehow. Just got a DAK turntable and controls to save the old vinyls...

Isn't the mind a wonderful thing. Not just a collection box for all the senses, but to organize and file those images, and be able to bring them back with such clarity. Great memories Pat, and great photos. That old Kodak (Ektachrome or Kodachrome) is impressive for maintaining an image.

I'm curious too, what scanner. Looks like it is doing a nice job too.

Innovative Technologies ITNS-300, about $50 at Amazon.

It has no manual controls, which is probably typical for the price range. It does a great job on 98% of the slides, but there are about 2% where it is pretty far off. Overall, I am happy, because a really expensive slide scanner would not have been worth it for my relatively finite collection of slides needing scanning.

It had a lot of trouble with this picture. I had to push the "Snapshot" button just as soon as it started to come up on the live view just to keep it from going virtually entirely black, then juice the contrast and saturation up on the computer. But in the end, I really like the result. This one is a candidate for some more "Photoshop Fun"!

These are really impressive images -- what kind of slide scanner are you using?
