I live on the ICW on the north end of Jax at a place called Black Hammock Island which is just south of Amelia Island by MM 46A. Give me a shout if you get down 904-219-2675
 
:D We live in Hampstead just south of Jacksonville and have often thought of going up there on our our 22 cruiser. I know the waterfront is limited up there due to the base. But I thought perhaps given the local knowledge of the folks on this thread someone might know of places up there to visit. Marinas, waterfront, restaurants or good overnight mooring locations any info would be appreciated.
 
I did think of a couple of things. There is a state park (I can't remember it's name) just North of Camp Lejeune on the ICW that has a dock and you can tie up there and overnight. Then you can go to Beaufort and out to Cape Lookout. You will love it there. Sea Turtles will surface next to your boat on their way to shore and you can hear them "blow". It's a great trip. Just watch the wind and current going out Beaufort Channel.

I was at EQ today and met Dusty. What an honor it was to meet him. Turns out my wife had flown one of the airplanes he had flown and we had a mutual friend, Al Stafford. Lots of connections there between the Navy/Marine Corps team. Can't say enough about this guy. What a privelidge it is to me to know him. I'm not saying anything here that everyone that has met him doesn't already know. I just wanted to say it publicly. If anyone is up here in the PNW and needs anything then EQ is the place to go.

You embarrass me. :oops: I’m just another old guy who loves his C-Dory. Bottom line, I’m one of a whole bunch of guys/gals who did their jobs as best they could and don’t live in the past. I know that I’m fortunate to be here and that luck beats skill anytime!! Fish, crab, shrimp (especially shrimp) are waiting for me out there, and I’m chomping at the bit to get my old classic finished and working.
It was my pleasure to meet a real Marine – and I certainly look forward to your wife’s change-of-command ceremony. Thanks a million for the invite. My uniform may be ripped to threads if I try to force in on this old fat bod – so whatever fits I’ll wear.

LOL. I just noticed you are from Beaufort. So I guess you know all this. How many people out there know how to pronounce "Beaufort"?
I was just at Camp Lejeune and had a blast. I love that area and anyone who hasn't been there should make it a point to go.

Depends on weather you are talking about Beaufort NC or Beaufort SC. :D One is pronouced BUfort and one BOfort. [/u]
 
I was speaking of BOfort, NC. Love it there as well as Cape Lookout and all of the outer Banks. It's like Buena Vista, Co. It's pronounced Bunna Vista.
 
I agree that part of the coast is beautiful. I grew up there a little south of Lejeune on Topsail Island. Nice little marina there at Surf City by the bridge called Boathouse Marina. It's only about 3 blocks from the marina to the ocean, a fishing pier, grocery store and several nice Sea Food joints.
 
I know that area well. I love Topsail Is. I was stationed at Camp Lejeune from 77-82 and my son is stationed there now. Ever go to the Sanitary Seafood Company?

Actually I was at Sanitary Seafood Company last fall on the way to the Oriental Gathering. I have a first cousin that lives in Beaufort and I own a house in Wilmington that I rent out. I figured you would have been to Topsail Island being stationed at Lejuene. I visited some boyhood friends there last fall I hadn't seen in 44 years.
 
I love all those areas. Oriental, Bath, Kitty Hawk, Duck. Willmington is probably one of the best kept secrets in America. I'd love to go to a gathering in Oriental or anywhere on the Outer Banks.
The Sanitary Seafood Company has to have the worst resturant name in America and probably the best seafood in America. At least it used to be. I assume it still is. And the waters from Camp Lejeune up to the Va coast are some of the best cruising grounds anywhere. I live on Whidbey Island, Wa and we have the San Juan Islands and it's beautiful here but your waters are just as gorgeous and it's warm. Hurricanes kind of suck but it's a great cruising ground. Perfect for C Dorys.
 
I actually grew up in Wilmington and my grandparents had a summer place at Topsail. Wilmington has changed a lot but they've done a good job of preserving the historical areas and the waterfront is pretty nice. I'd move back but I can't handle the winters been in Florida to long it was 80 degrees here today.
 
We were stationed in P'cola and Jax many times. I miss Fl and the sun and warm temps. Where do you live now? I'm comming back to Fl in April to visit friends and we are going to Tampa to a Jimmy Buffett concert. Can't wait.

We lived in Orange Park in Eagle Harbor. I'll be there in April and if the schedule works out I'd love to meet you and see your boat. I have a long term plan of going down the ICW from Jax to Key West.

I don't mean to embarrass you. I went into the Marine Corps in 72 which makes me a kid to you. My generation of Marines looks up to you guys and we still sit around the O'club and talk about you guys and what you did. My father in law turned 90 this year and he was a skipper of a mine sweeper in the South Pacific in WWII and I can tell you that it's an honor for me to know men like you two. I will introduce you to him at Courtney's change of command party and I'm sure you two will have a lot to talk about. You can remind him that skippers of the largest ships in the Navy are aviators. :)
I'm going to take whatever C Dory I have to Friday Harbor in May and I hope you are there. In the mean time I owe you lunch and a beer or several.

No problem on the embarrassment -- just a tender spot. Don't like to be singled out because I was just another one of a whole generation.

Years ago bought a house in Orange Park (corner of Frog Hollow and Grasshopper... wish I still had it! My PT was on skies in Doctor's Inlet!!
