Cam Guard

sounds like the additive ZPPD, which is a zinc type additive that has been removed / reduced in many oils and still in others. pretty important for cams, lifters and other engine parts. it is available as an additive and may be much cheaper than going with an aviation brand. just google ZPPD

akc, I Googled "ZPPD" as you suggested and learned another of our "governmental agencies", in this case the EPA, is at it again! Understandably removing some essential additives is going to have an effect on engine wear! I'm surprised we have not heard about this before now but perhaps I've not paid attention? And I see that old "Big Daddy" Don Gartlits is pushing his brand of the additive! If its good enough for "Don", how could we question the product! Thanks for your information.

For marine engines I would just use an oil designed for marine engines as it has been said they have additional corrosion inhibitors. I don't think you need any additives other than something to deal with the (Blue Marine Stabil) ethanol in your gas and Yamaha Ring Free or any other brand that prevents carbon build up on the back of your valves in a four stroke motor and carbon build up on the top of your cylinders which can cause piston rings to break. Changing oil at recommended intervals along with the filter and treating your gasoline and changing fuel filters will probably have the motor lasting longer than you care to own it. IMHO
Nothing against Big Daddy.

DD; Thanks for your comments. Would you provide the brand name of a "marine grade oil" that you might know about? I've been using the "Castrol Magnatec" in multi-weight grade and occasionally add "Valvtec" to gasoline, designed as you have pointed out, to protect against carbon deposit buildup. I'm primarily concerned about what has been "left out" of our engine lubricating oil to appease the EPA!

Todays major Oils don't need any extra Additives.
By adding stuff to the Oil you throw the Additive Package out of balance
which can do more bad than good! Use good Oil and change often.
What does the Engine Manufacturer recommend?
Cheers, Peter.

Automotive oils have had the zinc removed from them, and Marine oils I am told have not.

For longest life we strongly recomend marine grade oils offered by the marine engine manufacturers. Stick with the oil offered by your engine manufacturer and you can't go wrong.

What Honda has said:

Honda Marine 10W-30 FC-W oil is approved by the national Marine Manufacturing Association (NMMA) to meet the rigorous FC-W standard. It has also been tested by Honda Research and Development and certified for use in all Honda marine engines, complying with all of Honda’s service and warranty requirements. Honda FC-W10W-30 Marine engine oil’s advantages over automotive oils include:

* Increased rust and oxidation inhibitors to fight corrosion in the marine environment
* Shear stable polymers to resist viscosity breakdown under high rpm and high load conditions
* Better anti-foaming characteristics to better protect the engine at high rpm
* Excellent performance in High Temperature High Shear Viscosity test to ensure viscosity retention despite the fuel dilution associated with marine engines
* Additional anti-wear additives for better bearing protection

I wonder if the "anti-wear" additives include "zinc"?
