I found out that the writer of Moby Dick had to give up writing after his historic book. At the time of its release it was a complete failure. Bad review and just about no sells. It ended his writing. He ended up working as a customs inspector until his death.
I just read you link and even Thu it does not go in to detail it supports what I posted. His decline followed the release of moby Dick, which did not sell well. It only became famous,as it should have, long afterhis death. Wiki is not the end all of info.
Melville kept writing but it wasn't paying the bills so he did go back to customs inspector. His last novel was published decades after his death. At the time, whaling was in it's heyday, so a novel about it must have been a yawn. Only much later did it become classic work.
